My brother has an Iomega 500Gb which he is very happy with.

My advice is stay away from anthing made by Emtec - my "Movie Cube" has just stopped working for no apparent reason!

The WD TV is a popular choice in the <€100 range. It plays most formats, has HDMI and optical out, and is very simple to use. Spend the rest of your budget on an external USB drive (either 2.5" or 3.5", whichever you prefer) and away you go.

Theres a lot of generic Media Boxes around at the moment, and to be honest most of them are an unknown quantity. Most of them only support old formats like MPEG-4 Part 2 (Xvid/DivX), MPEG-2 etc.

i have the same question but i need a hard drive built in.

its gonna be a present for my 4 young sisters. all less than 10

so the remote needs to be fairly easy.

i was gonna just load it up with kids films / cartoons and give it to them

doesnt need network capabilities or anything. doesnt even need great connections

just has to be easy to use

The xtreamer is a good option

These boxes have HDMI connex, but are unable to play HD movies...aka mkv files !!
What good to get only for SD movies !

Get somethig that actually plays HD not only having HDMI connections but also capable of playing 'old good' mkv files !!

    mkv is supported @ 1080P!

The Dane-Elec Media Players are also available in Easons. Prices are simialr when you include P&P.

On another note, what is the story with buying from 7 Day Shop now, can you be charged extra by customs as the Channel Islands are outside the EU?

xtreamer looks ok,the previous as well...is very important to play mkv files as this is the format that u can use from "underground".

And if the guys needs a box only for SD,then any of them will do it tbh ! ! But why not do a future proof purchase and get a decent one, cause they can't be upgraded at a later stage..

Check the previous posting time and see a small difference in posting/editing !

have had good experience with the imoega screenplay 500gb and 1tb. HD is built in. small and portable.

have had bad with the imoega screenplay pro - needed other manufacturers firmware before it would play xvid and divx.

Sumvision Cyclone MKV Media Player Version 2 - MKV, DIVX, ISO, RMVB, 1080P, network

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/188647 64 quid sterling (not inc shipping to Ireland)

Make sure it's V2 - V1 didn't do DTS downmixing and Network Services (YouTube etc)

That's 20-30 quid cheaper than the WD Live and Asus O!Play.

    AVForums.com thread here.

Disclaimer: I don't have this, but I reckon it's a lot better than the previous-gen iStar HD Popcorn-Hour clone I have...
