Advice needed - 2002 VW Passat

I'm looking to buy a VW Passat so went to view this today. Thing is the car needs a bit of work but I'm not sure how much the work will come to.
Heres a list of what work needs done

Timing Belt (not 100% on this yet)
    Clutch
Have to replace drivers side mirror
Grill for the end bit of the bumper
    2 new tyres
The second release thing for the bonnet
Apart from those things and from what I can tell the car seems to be in a good condition.
Can anyone give me a rough estimate of what I'd end up paying for the work needed? Or should I just leave it and start looking again?

I'd leave it Eoin, you don't want to buy a load of bills and problems.

There are loads of good ones out there, take you time and get a minter

What mileage is up on it as a matter of interest?

Thanks for the quick reply Hammertime. No I don't want to buy a load of problems and especially bills in the current climate .
I have a budget of €3000 - €3500 for the car and was thinking (hoping) that I could fix the car, well the mechanical problems (wouldn't be to pushed about the cosmetic things atm) and the mirror out of what I had left and get atleast 2 years out of the car without having to put anymore money into it, well besides maintanence etc.

I've actually been finding it hard to find a nice comfortline passat in diesel within my budget for just over a month now :(

The timing belt and clutch are going to be expensive. the rest is'nt to bad. I wouldnt buy it unless i was getting it for a very good price with the repairs takin into consideration aswell.
Any idea how much around they could come to? I had the guy down to €2800 and told him I'd get back onto him tomorrow after getting and estimate on repairs. I'd say I could get him down to €2650 - €2700.

to be fair, its a pretty low budget for a Comfortline Passat. I've a 01 with more mileage than that and there's no way I'd let it go for even close to that money.

Steer clear, i recently sold a 04 1.8t sports line VW Passat, €5,000.
You will get a far better car for less, I know the timing belt will cost around 600 inc. labour. The whole front end has to be stripped right down, I'm talking bumper, radiator, the lot. then the water pump has to be replaced along with fan belt tension wheel and timing belt. So I would say inc. the price of the car plus the other said mentioned items, €4.800.

blackwater motors in fermoy are main vw dealers and are doing a special deal for 450 euro for timing belt replacment. try and get a red d red i 130 bhp diesel passat i had a 01 and sold it with 180k miles of trouble free motoring what a fantastic car.

Why buy a car that needs alot more money spent on it as soon as you drive it away? Surely if what needs fixing could be done cheap then the current seller would have got it done and look for more money for the car?

Your looking at the bones of a grand for the timing belt and clutch.
The mirror is electric so if the motors are damaged you are looking at another few hundred euro to find replacement or you could be lucky and it could just be the cover.
Tyres depending on the size of the rim say 90 euro each
Saftey catch for bonnet say 30euro at the scrap yard
The Drivers side grill about 10euro at the scrap yard.

As another poster said why fork out so much for a car that need so much work done to it. After all it has 125k done its already overdue it timing belt service. Its also is probably due a oil change, air filter, diesel filter, pollen filter. Its a car that the has the usefulness driven out of it and it looks as if the previous owner could car less about looking after the car. I would avoid at all costs.

Edit just looked on mywheels.ie its also the 100bhp model I had one for a short while found it to be very lazy at times. 130bhp much better. Oh and those number plates will more than likely have to be taken off (due to the font) and replaced for standard legal reg plates for the NCT.

Just adding up the repairs total there. For parts and labour i would think €1600 - €1800 would be fair. Excluding DMF.

Unless you were in a position to fit these parts yourself OP, I'd stay well away from this motor. The timing belt & water pump with the labour will set you back around 550 Euro. It's not difficult to do but a fair bit of gear has to come off the front to do it right.

As for the clutch, your into around 1,300 Euro to have the whole thing done right, 800-900 Euro of that being parts (clutch assembly & DMF).

So your up to 2K already just for those two transactions, before you get into any potential complications on those jobs like a leaking CV boot or ball joint (and wishbone also as they are integrated parts on the Passat's), or a gearbox or crankshaft oil seal, that might be discovered along the way.
