Last weekend I had a brutal time of it, I missed about 4 cocks in one day, luckily enough I shot the fifth one. Today I missed the first and shot 2 more with snap shots, what did I do differently....... I slowed down and took my time!

Go to a clayground and shoot some skeet under the eye of an experienced shot..its all about speed ,angle and distance...that will bring you on ;)

This is the right idea of what to do, before changing sights or anything else,
even better, a single trap to practice the same clay bird over again, until you see where you are going wrong and can hit it every time. then try a different bird.

Try a straight down the line first, then a crossing left to right, then a crossing right to left, then you can vary the clay birds and shoot them. missing one off shots in the field can be very frustrating, because you can't see where you are going wrong, also make sure you call the clay birds with the gun in the position you are carrying it when out in the field, not with the stock in your shoulder.

    Dvs.

Or maybe your just in too much of a hurry to take the shot? I missed some easy pheasants because of it.

Are you're chokes too tight or are you using heavy shot?

the next bird that gets up just remember you have more time that you think. watch him get up and be sure of the line he is heading and let him get away from you. try only loading one barrel and make it count

As said it's all about slowing down.
Get your feet right & lean slightly into the shot. Practice gun placement on the shoulder. Do a few lifts to the shoulder when you start off also to get your eye down the barrel & losen the muscles. I have a habit of this when I take the gun out of the car & when I put the cartridges in.... :)

If the bird is flying away from you, you have an age so take your time.
If it is flying across you or at an angle, bring the gun up behind him, in his flight line & catch up with his pace. Aim a little in front of him & keep the flow/movement of the gun as you fire.
I found awhile back i was shooting the tail feathers off birds & they weren't dropping. Started to aim that bit in front of crossers & hey presto bird in the bag.
Also I use a 6/7 32g in the top barrel & a 5 34g for the 2nd for a few reasons. If he gets up close to you in cover you either take the shot or leave him. Light cartridge stops you wrecking them & if you meet a few woodcock isn't too heavy.
The 5 gives plenty of kick for a longer shot (after missing the 1st ;))
    Combination works for me...

I bet your problem is that your mad keen & the more you miss the more your rushing etc. End of the day it is a hobby & isn't it nice to meet a few birds, if you get one great if you don't least you rose a few for the dog & saw a few. Just chill out & once you get 1 or 2 your confidence will be back...

what i found worked for me was to get some snipe or duck shooting in. use the water as a bag drop try find some where where you are firing down hill (easier said than done) but what i found was that allowed me to see why i was missing. I soon realised that i was allways 6 -8inches behind where i should be. now I have no excuse for missing!!!:D:D

If your missing that much, your gun probably doesn't fit and/or you have eye dominance issues which means your gun is not pointing where you think it's pointing. Get it checked.
