Prostitution in Ireland

So yesterday i had a few friends over, and we talked about prostitution in Ireland.
Apparently women are being trafficked over, passports seized, drugged and used for prostitution.
I am not naive to think it doesn't exist but i never thought we had the niche market for prostitution...
Do you know anyone who uses prostitutes in Ireland? Apart from Leeson St, is there anywhere else to find them?
I would consider myself a lads girl, as i hang out with lads all the time and i don't know anyone who uses prostitutes in Ireland(common when lads go to Amsterdam though but not at home)

Mods; not looking to get into a debate like in the Politics/humanity forum :)

Why did you not think there was a market for it in Ireland?

People that use them aren't usually vocal about it

Lol, like the men of Ireland are so innocent.

I know a couple. I know one of them used an escort (google escorts ireland or something similiar), don't know about the other guy.

Most of the "girls" who used to work Benburb St before the Luas line went down looked like Peggy Mitchell and spoke like Phil Mitchell, might explain why there is a need to traffic women into the country :P

As far as I know there are several escort agencies and things, in the gray area of "you're paying for company, if anything happens it's between consenting adults"...not really sure that excuse works on a legal basis
But anyway, it's pretty easy, there's even a forum dedicated to finding places, sharing info, reviews, that sort of thing.
General consensus is that they're shoite and a complete rip off in Ireland though (€130 for half an hour )
Note that I haven't actually gotten around to using one myself yet :P

Bit off topic but one time my brother was driving round an estate with one of the lads and he says to my brother "Do you wanna see where the brothel is round here?"

Says yeah and the pull up to a house except the house where the brothel was, was in fact the house my auld lad rents out:eek:

Well know if any of my friends were 'using' them they would not be bragging about it.
Was offered one on aungier street about 5-6 years ago. The girl was out of her head, could not see straight and looked like she was dragged through a ditch a couple of times before getting a couple of slaps.
I politely declined and walked on. Felt bad for her.

Apparently there's a brothel on Bothar Irwin but I can't think of anyone who would be desperate enough to go there. I'd rather go without tbh.
If there's anyone I wouldn't hesitate to kill it's a pimp/trafficker. Selling other people, how ****ed up in your head do you have to be to do that?

    Lols at the replies.....

I just never thought there was a market :(

Yeah, i only found out about Benburb street recently.... It's near the four courts so i was surprised when someone told me :O

In all along the canal near baggot street. I used live around there and be propositioned by them all the time (one had a D4 accent).

Friends of mine lived in a flat in tralee and had to move out because the next door flat was a brothel and the were always being woken up at night by people ringing the wrong doorbell.

Read 'Lyn - a story of Prostitution' gives a pretty stark picture of a life of an Irish Prostitute.

There's always a market. Always has been and always will be. There's probably a brothel in every housing estate ;)

It really is nothing people would talk about. Prostitutes are considered dirty and disgusting, especially here in Ireland. Thre aren't many men who would admit to visiting one.

And probably less again would admit to using a knowingly trafficked slave.

Apparently Dublin has become a capital for prostitution, more here than Amsterdam google Escort ireland and judge for yourself. But yes none of my mates uses them at least no one says they do, I suppose 1 nighters are to easy to find in Dub.

There are prostitutes in every town in Ireland. Sad but true. If someone actively chooses that as a means to earn money well that's their business.
There was a primetime documentary on this a year or so ago about trafficking and I find it upsetting to think there are women and young girls being lured to Ireland with the prospect of a better life only to be bought, locked up and abused.

I'd be fairly sure of all the times I have driven down and worked on Leeson St there haven't been any brassers walking around, people spilling out of nightclubs yes... think you have your street names slightly mixed up!

Ah poor petal, someone makes a funny comment which very slightly impinges on your ego so you have a crack at their intellect.

    How sad.

I use to live in Scotland and my god, what an industry it is over there. A friend of mine would wake up to used condoms and prostitues in practice outside her place pretty much every morning.

Saw one standing on the side of the street crying while waiting to be picked up. That was upsetting.

There should be an agency or charity set up to helps these girls. A lot of them must feel so trapped and don't know where to turn to. I guess though, if there was an organisation to help them, a lot of women wouldn't go for help for fear of being sent back home if they're here illegally.

I know of a good few brothels around the Finglas area. All run by eastern Europeans apparently.

There used to be one in Cavan, they advertised as a "massage from your nose down to your toes".

Completely agree that it is everywhere. As well as on streets and the internet, you can find them under advertising sections on the back of some newpapers aswell, under personal ads or various other disguises. And agree with WindSock I doubt you would find many people admitting to calling them.

There is a few such as Rhuama.

Yeah prostitution is massive in Ireland. There been a few great threads on the Ladies Lounge and Humanities on the topic. You can quite easily pick out the posters who frequent escorts as they defend prostitution to the death, well until the thread gets locked anyway.

The Galway races is one of the biggest events in Europe for working prostitutes.

I heard even Butters is a pimp now

In those countries with legal prostitution e.g. Germany & Netherlands, does trafficking still happen on a large scale for sexual exploitation?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,710 ✭✭✭RoadKillTs

It's one of the oldest trades around! While men exist there will always be demand :)

There was a brothel near the back of the Arlington Hotel in town. Think it was closed down this year.

A religious order doing good work? You might upset some Catholic bashers on AH by saying that!

Few years ago I did a lot of driving around the Cork area. There was a few women always thumbing out of the city or hitching a lift back in ;). One very stormy and wet evening I stopped to give a lift to one very weather beaten woman on her way back into the city. Turned out it's a lifestyle she never wanted to get into but found the money easy to make and didn't mind the work too much. She is a very nice woman, real character, wicked laugh, good company with cloths on.

I learned a lesson, not to judge people by appearance.

If you look at the Sex Workers Alliance of Ireland thread, you'll see that most of them aren't trafficked, and many are willing.

I heard a massive sting operation over the 2006 world cup in Germany only found a handful of trafficked women - after all, why bother with slavery when one can make almost as much from free workers? Tesco pays €9 per hour, a brothel pays €200 or so - are you saying no-one will be tempted?

Used to live by Benburb St, sometimes you'd see some SERIOUSLY rough looking aulone's out there turning tricks. I remember years ago you used to see them up around Fitzwilliam Square, but afaik they all work out of apartments and stuff now.

You should youtube The Dubliners singing about the Monto. Ronnie Drew gives a great little intro. Prostitution has always been rife in Dublin since time began. When the church got too powerful and tried to quash it, it just drove it underground. The gay saunas were operating here for years as well. All manner of bishops and priests going in.
