Hi, have searched on-line and here and cannot really get a straight answer on this, can I use a three pin to 2 pin adapter in Canada and just charge my Irish DS?

I know these adapters don't step up the power or anything but I assume that because the Volts here are 110 compared to our 240 it can't do any harm to it? worst case it won't charge it at all but wanted to see if anyone had done this.

Cheers I know but a phone charger can take either voltage same for laptops the chargers will take 110 and 240, we've used the adapter for a few things but don't want to take the chance with the DS as on the charger it only says input of 240, thought the unit itself says it only needs 5.3 volts or that, so I dunno just wondering has anyone charged like this for a good while and not burnt it out or that.

Firstly where the DS is from is irrelevant, its all about the charger.

You can not use an irish charger in canada using just a regular adapter. There is step up converters but they are quite dear

You can use a canadian charger on your Irish DS, You should be able to buy one in gamestop or best buy for about a $10

just get a USB charging cable, saves the hassle.
If you don't have access to a laptop/pc etc you may need a USB plug

cheers but do you know what would happen if I did do it? The laptops are fine but the power supply for those must have step up built in or something.

Hi just in case anyone is wondering, Nintendo emailed me back saying 'ideally' one would use a charger meant for Canada.

Reply below I was pretty surprised at the customer service :D

    thank you for your e-mail.

Ideally you should use a charger made for their voltage. These should be available in the shops over there. Not all voltage regulators work with Nintendo chargers.

    Kind regards,

    Your Nintendo Team

I've never tried in Canada, but had no problem charging my DS in Japan (100v) while I was there..I don't think it's going to explode or anything, might just take a bit longer to charge (although I didn't notice any difference)

Your laptops power-supply is probably built for both voltages, check the writting on the back and you'll see.

In most game shops in US or Canada (GameStop, Radio Shack, Walmart, etc) you can get a replacement US 120V charger for a DS for about $5-$10.

Another option would be to get a 12V cigarette lighter car charger.

^ Cheers, the laprtops are fine alright as the chargers are made for either voltage, I've used the small adapter thing a few times since and it seems fine lower power going in so im not going to buy a charger now.
