Stated running in Early June. did a few 5k's 3-4 I think. got my time down from first 5k 24 mins to 18.15 in mid sept. I can run a mile in 5.20. I do speed training once a week and then 2 long slowish runs(1 hour) during the week.
I have never ran one before. I ran 5 miles in 31.30 recently in training pushed myself a bit I was fairly out off breath, but not as much as say my 5k races which I give everything. I am in my early 30's. there is a 10k coming up in April. How hard would it be to break 37 mins by then?

For a lad new to running your times are very good and you seem to be able to train properly.
If you can run 5km in over 18 min you must know that 37 min for 10km isnt a million miles away especially with 4 months training.

Or maybe you want me to tell you how great you are etc etc.......I dont know.
    DO NXT WEEKS 10KM RACE.

I agree with VR! Do the 10km next week in the park, it will give you an idea of where you are at now, and then you can judge for youself how much needs to be done to go sub 37!

    Yes please:D

I am not in Dublin, so I won't be able to get their next week either. But I think I will see if I can run one before that. To be honest I really want to touch 36 flat. but I think I might be at a stage now were the improvements will be small. And I might be a bit delusional with that target

I just got the running bug at the moment, and I want to do my best as next year. I might not have it.Well I hope not.

I know for 5k I could not run another 50 metres at the end. so that's why I think the 10k might be different

If it helps my 5k PB is 21:02 and my 10k PB is 45:32. I ran extremely hard in both those races and had nothing left at the end of either. Both were very flat races aswell. So perhaps that may give you some indication as to how your 5k time converts into 10k.

Here's a thread I set up awhile back

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055701921

It might be helpful as everybody has their PB's for various distances listed so you can use that to make a realistic estimate of what you are capable of perhaps.

It's not a case of multiplying your 5k time by two. If you want to hit a 36 minute 10k, you should probably be around 17:20 for your 5k time (according to McMillan).

Yeah, will be tough but going to try and get my 5k to that. a.s.a.p

are you carrying much fat? If you reckon your times are approaching a plateau, consider fat reduction as well as your actual training.

I dropped off 4Kg in 2008 before an endurrance event & it made a big difference to my performance.

But to answer your question, i reckon the answer is yes you can probably achieve your target, it depends a lot on how bad you want it.

    best of luck.

You're only running 5 months. I guarantee you that you will break 36 minutes if not 35 by this time next year. Your training schedule is ok but not great - do some research, buy some books, read some more threads on here, etc. You have no idea of your potential but you will be amazed what you can do if you stick with it. Enjoy!
