    Hello all,

Classically enough I dont know why Im writing this but I know I need help, or at least I know I need to help myself. Ive left my bedroom a handful of times this week, skipped college (im doing a masters, now isnt the time for me to be doing this) and just sleep all day and read or watch tv at night and doze. Im on antidepressants but Im not feeling any better. When I do leave its to get food, I end up in the shop near me for twenty minutes trying to decide between one thing or another and its as though everyone is looking at me. I cant function but I have so much to do, I have to get up tomorrow and do something or else Im going to miss deadlines. But I cant face outside anymore. I know that I have to help myself and Im the only one that can do that but this is going on for so long now that I dont know how. I feel so numb. If someone here could push me out the door I wish they could, I feel as though Im losing my grip on my sanity.

You poor thing, it sounds like you're having a really tough time of it at the moment.
I was deeply depressed a few months ago, and found that the anti-depressants only helped to take the edge off of things. Have you considered getting yourself some counselling? You sound like you're very alone in this?
It really helped me to get through the tough times. I'm completely out the other side of it now, it took a long time....but it's hard to believe where I am now compared to where I was six months ago. I too felt like I was utterly losing it.
I was also struggling with college as well. I went to the academic advisory office in my college, and spoke to them.If you don't feel up to speaking to them yourself, have you someone you could get to ring them for you? If not, maybe send them an email. They gave me a few options.
One was to defer the semester, and do it the following year, and if I was feeling better after christmas to do the second semester then. They also offered extensions on my assignments, and if I needed to, to defer the entire year until I was well again.
Most colleges I think would have some options for you. If you feel you cant cope with the pressure of it at the moment, then you don't need to. Take some time off for yourself, to get back on your feet.
I urge you to get some counselling for yourself, it's not a quick fix answer, it will take time, but it really really helps to get you through.
I hope you find something for yourself. Hang on to hope.
    xxx

I was where you were only a few months back and Im so much improved. As the last poster said I cant believe how far Ive come since then. Depression is amazing an so common. This weather and the bad news on the media all the time really doesnt help.
Stay on the antidepressants and confer with your doctor. It was only by going up to a certain dose that it worked for me.
You will need someone to talk to. To offload to. I use someone in my family and a friend.
Also you really could do with some counselling/psychotherapy. It would do you the world of good. As a student you probably dont have much money so look for counsellors who charge a sliding scale. You might get it for €30 and it would be money well spent.
Hang in there. Let us know how you get on.

You need to plan what you are going to do, otherwise there probably isn't a hope you'll get out of bed. Small things like going for a coffee or making another doctors appointment. Sometimes people need to try a few different brands of anti-depresant before they find one that works. Both depression and anti-depressants can cause lack of appetite. That's probably why it's taking you so long to choose food, if you were hungry you'd know what you wanted to eat.

Man up and finish your masters or don't, those are your options. Or I guess you could set up a trend of posting on random websites until you magically qulify for the masters degree I presume you actually wanted at some point?

If only it were that simple. Depression is complicated. Anyway s/he will finish the Masters, OP is having a difficult time at the moment and isn't feeling up to doing college work just now but having reached this level of education they aren't going to throw it all away that easily.

As someone who has been through this illness this is just not fair or accurate. OP the other posts are useful let us know how you get on. Another option is Aware group sessions. Theyre are free and you can look up on their website. I have been to these and they are useful. One on tonight.
