I have an xbox, worth getting a PS3 as well?

I'm thinking about picking up a PS3, mainly because it's free to play online and most people I know have a ps3. But €300+ for it seems a bit much just for that.

What other aspects make it worth a purchase? I know a lot of people own both, so is it worth the money? There seem to be a lot less unique games on different consoles these days, are Sony going to be putting out anything amazing in the next year or two that I won't get elsewhere?

Also I get the impression the xbox is kind of on the way out, whereas the Ps3 is hitting its stride in terms of ownershp and the like, so might be likely to see more unique titles?

Anyway, is it worth it in you playstation fans opinion?

    Uncharted 2

I picked one up about half a year ago for the wealth of exclusives it has: Demon Souls, Valkyria Chronicles, MGS4, GT5, the Ratchet games, plus a few others I cant think of.

Uncharted 1 is reason enough to own a PS3, and from what I've heard, #2 is better still...
Then there are upcoming games like God of War 3, Heavy rain, erm... Some other stuff I can't remember...

You really need to look at the exclusive games and work out if you really
want to play them that badly.
There's a big-ass thread in the games forum if you need any further convincing.

Had a look at that thread but it kept mentioning GPU GFX and all the techno-crap. I just want to know if there are gonna be some quality exclusives in the future and if the currnet ones are worth the money.

    Uncharted 1 & 2, both stellar games.
    Killzone2
    Infamous
    Metal Gear Solid 4
    Resistance 1&2
    Little Big Planet
    Ratchet and Clank series.
    DemonSouls

    Upcoming:
    Heavy Rain
    God of War 3
    White Knight Chronicles

Gah, surely that's enough games to keep the average gamer interested for 3-6 months?

Gah, surely that's enough games to keep the average gamer interested for 3-6 months?

...and that's not even mentioning the wealth of quality exclusive titles on PSN

    flower
    Wipeout HD
    Super Stardust HD
    Pixeljunk Monsters
    Critter Crunch
    Crash Commando
    Siren: Blood Curse
    Warhawk
    Darkmist

    then there's also the upcoming:
Gran Turismo 5, Pixeljunk 1-4, MAG, Final Fantasy XIII

bleeeaaahh.. there's so many. Here's a full list:

HUGE +1 to Demon's Souls. Simply amazing game, and even after completing 1 playthrough of it I know I haven't even scratched the surface.

Just looked at a few of those and I gotta say both Demon;s souls and heavy rain have sold me a fair bit. Think i may take the plunge.

Uncharted 2 box still available anywhere?

You might aswell put up an advert to sell that xbox already, you won't go back.

3/4 of the way through Uncharted 2, good game, not worth buying the console for.
It's main use for me is going to be as a Blu-Ray player.

About a month or so ago I picked up a PS3 (60GB) after owning a 360 for about 2 years. Here is what I've found...

360 is still my primary machine due to..
    - Me preferring the 360 controller
    - Online being better (and imo worth the money) and most of mates being on Live (more important fact)
    - Cross platforms games being, in the majority of cases, better on the 360

However, I do not regret getting the PS3 in the slightest due to, as the posters above have outlined, the number of great exclusive titles both at retail and on PSN.

So to answer your question, is it worth getting a PS3 even if you have a 360? Hell yes it is. :)

    ^Pretty much spot on.

Tho my xbox hasnt been switched on once since I got the ps3 lol

Honestly man, YES is the answer....The xbox imo has not nearly enough good games compared to the ps3...Gears of war (what a pile of dung imo) where as Uncharted had class single player but online not so good (not a fan of TPS's)...

Anyways go get a PS3 and get MW 2 as it is probably the greatest game I have played online in my life  and I am serious..The fact of paying 60euro a year for xbox live would piss me off...But still it is a good service but tbh I think PS's online service is better than XBL because XBL has way too much sh1t going on that I just don't have time for...

I`m enjoy the non game elements of the PS3 alot tbh, bluray is nice, it can stream files across networks just like the 360 (may have more file type support ? Not sure about that one). The webbrowser is actually a massive boon, I`m using it watch the rte iplayer, its the job, perfect for anything around that quality. Support for HD flash is sketchy though, I really hope they add it at a later stage, would be a massive bonus. The fact the slim model is alot quiter than the 360 (older models) makes it far more suited to it too.

Games wise theres some nice exclusives MGS4, uncharted, I`m working my way through the rest, but theres enough to make it worthwhile at this stage.

    Downsides in my books.

Controller isnt as good as the 360s, the tilt is a nice gimmick, but most I have tried games dont make use of the triggers (if you could call them that) at all. Shooters dont feel right without a trigger IMO, and wipeout hd suffers from it too, you cant vary throttle at all.

PSN doesnt have the same selection as XBL, and doesnt have as many demos at all. Its not bad though.

Install times are the other problem, so games rip the piss, like MGS4, 20 minutes at the start and 5 minutes between each chapter (theres only 5 chapters at least)

Overall I think you`ll get pretty decent value for money from it, but nowhere near what you would get if it was going to be your first and only console, due to all the cross platform games.

XBL is not good because it has too many features?
    And it's not €60 a year.

Oh, and so far all the tests have said MW2 is better on the 360 ;)

Save yourself the money and just watch cutscenes on youtube instead... You won't be missing out on much at all.
Its the most sold game because it was massively overhyped, and received glowing reviews despite it actually being a bit on the dull side.

Agreed, one of the most overhyped games ever along with GTA IV (what is it with these fourth itterations).

To answer the OPs question I'm going to say no. If you didn't already have an XBox and were planning to buy either of the two I'd probably recommend the PS3, it's just better value for money. However, having both, I spend the majority of my time on the 360 as the controller is just so much better.

Also, of the PS3 exclusives listed, there are very few that are system sellers in my opinion. Beyond the Uncharted series there is nothing truely spectacular. Little Big Planet and Resistance 2 are two on a very small list of games that I couldn't bother finishing as they were very mediocre. All the real gems these days are multi-platform.

Valkyria Chronicles on the other hand.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,804 ✭✭✭Benzino

Having both consoles, I would recommend you get a PS3 also. I do prefer the Xbox myself, the controller is better (with the triggers, and the position of the left thumbstick, something I think Sony need to adjust with their next controller as the thumbstick is now the default choice in games rather than the d-pad).

XBL is also allot better as well, I wasn't keen on it at first considering you have to pay for it, but it's worth it imo.

In general, I would choose the xbox if I could only have one, but the exclusives on the ps3 are fantastic.

Killzone 2 (one of the best fps games of the year (brillant online) )
    Uncharted 1 & 2
    inFamous
Resistance 1 & 2 (I dunno what it is about these games, I can't help but think they are average but I loved them, maybe it's the weapons?)

well the list goes on and on. Basically, check out the exclusives for it, if they don't interest you, don't get it (since you can play multi-platform games on the 360), though Im sure you'll love most of the exclusives.

Cheers for all the advice. I went and got a ps3 today with codmw2. Picked up killzone 2, everybody's golf and valkyria chronicles as well. Probably gonna grab uncharted 1 as well. That way by the time I get to the sequel it'll be half the price!

Valkyria Chronicles really swung it for me. Looks amazing. I decided to look at whats out on the 360 as well as the ps3 and there's just nothing for christmas except cod on the xbox. (I didn't like assassin's creed and I'm not risking €50 on the sequel even if it is improved.) The ps3 on the other hand just had loads, and I got NONE of them! I'll pick up all the cheaper older ones I've missed first. Sure it pays for itself like that!

So in sum - I'm happy. There's nothing unique for me on the xbox, too many shooters, even though I'm a fan I like variety. Plus I'm an everybody's golf fan since the first one on the ps1.

Now I've to wait till Christmas for it!

Other than a hdmi cable, is there anything accesory wise worth getting? Not into an extra controller, I stick pretty much exclusively with ps1 and n64 for multiplayer. Can't beat track and field! But other than that?

Anyways cheers again everyone and merry christmas! ;)

I find a USB extension cable to be a godsend for those times when you want to keep playing while charging the controller (the lead it comes with is less than a foot long!)
    One of these should do
Oh yeah, and the official remote control is essential if you'll be using it as a media player (it makes a nice one)

Other than that and the HDMI cable, you're pretty much ready to go out of the box (I guess you should get a headset too if you're planning on playing CoD online)

Merry christmas to you too, but it looks like you're guaranteed one anyway!;)

ive got an xbox 360 and a mate of mine recently got a ps3.

I was playing Fifa on the ps3 using a hdmi cable on a full hd tv(1080p) and the graphics were still better on the xbox.

I xbox has better graphics, has a much better designed controller(wasnt ever a fan of ps3 controllers since the analog sticks came out. very awkward to use.).

I was playing madden yesterday on the ps3 and in the middle of the game is asked did we want to update! the xbox only does it when u start a game! and finally, the ps3 menu is very difficult to navigate. I was contemplating on getting one (especially for blueray) but now I think ill stick with the xbox even if it did get the RROD

    These: http://www.gioteck.com/productpages/product_realtriggers.html

You can pick them up in Smyths or Gamestop for a few euros. They make an incredible amount of difference to the triggers. If you are used to the 360 triggers then these are a must have.

Ask anyone who has them. People who don't have them and say they are pointless don't know what they are talking about. There's a reason the concave triggers on the 360 controller are considered superior to the PS3's ones.

I don't find the menu difficult to navigate, I've heard that about the graphics before so I prolly have to give you that one although I'd like to read up on why they might be better. As for the game update? Iv'e never come accross that. It only ever updates when I put the game in. Must be a bug, which I'm sure could rectified quite easily.

Have a 360 for over two years, got a PS3 this summer.

Was it worth it? Well, the PS3 is now my default media player. It's way quieter for watching dvds and obviously the blu-ray capability is great for movies.

In terms of games - well, primarily cos of the (imho) superior controller, I get multi platform games on the 360.

I've enjoyed a few games on the PS3 - I really enjoyed Resistance 1 & 2 and Uncharted. But I found LittleBigPlanet and MGS4 to be overhyped and shallow.

Haven't touched it for games in months. But have the God of War collection on the way and can't wait for God of War III.

So I think it depends - I don't regret getting one cos it's great as blu-ray player. But in terms of games - I really haven't had any mind blowing experiences on it.

The graphics are better IMO on some of the PS3 exclusive games like Uncharted 2 and Killzone 2.

most 360 games don't come anywhere near that.

Most games that look better on 360 is because they were then ported to PS3 and the differences are usually so minimal that its not worth discussing.

I have both. PS3 user interface is infinitely better than the new 360 dash which uses your entire TV screen to display about two lines of text on a big board. Its much faster to get around the PS3 too as it doesn't load ads every time you navigate to a new item. its also faster to access your messages as Ms load the status for all your friends when you click on the friends and it takes it too long to do this if you have many friends.

^This, I use my PS3 for watching tv (play tv) and watching anything I have on my laptop as it plays most formats I use and its whisper quiet compared to 360. In fact I can't remember the last time I played my 360 at this stage. My housemate plays it when I'm at work which is why my status updates in my sig.

There are officially only tests at the moment but you can pick up RTE1, RTE2, TV3, TG4, Radio1, 2FM, RnaG and Lyric fm. Only time will tell if anything else is added to the list for free. Probably a long time. :D

Picture is excellent thanks to the PS3s upscaling and theres a full thread in the Terrestrial forum on it.

actually the xmb is nearly the same as the dashboard. with dashboard you go up and down then left and right when your on the proper function as such. with ps3 its left to right then up and down. like the new xbox dashboard sideways. must be so hard to comprehend

Don't know if its broadcasting in the area (terrestrial forum under tech->Cable & Digital TV will tell you that.

You don't need a special aerial, any aerial that can receive clear analog should do (ruling most indoor aerials out unless your near the mast).

On top of RTE1/2/TV3/TG4 at pretty close to DVD quality and with EPG, you also get RTE News now and the radio channels with the ability to record programming and schedule it to record at any time.

Recording programmes can be done by simply selecting them from the EPG (TV guide to sky users) or you can set the time.

You can also pause live tv or set it recording all the time so if in a football match, you think its a foul and it wasn't replayed, you can just rewind and watch it again and continue watching the match although a little delayed now or go back to live feed if nothing is happening.

The quality is a big improvement over analog for sports IMO and its nice to have a HD interface over it all so its easy to read the EPG info. One nice touch is that it will show whats currently on if you press X I think it is and behind the program is a progress bar showing you how far into the program it is. It also has a clock if you care :P

You get Digital Aertel too which is as fast (a little faster probably) than the red button on most sky channels and it continues showing the channel in the top right corner in a smaller window.

The PS3 is definitly a supperior console IMO, it loads faster has a better interface and has better graphics.
I have both Xbox360 and PS3 where the Xbox has the advantage is the xbox games are usualy cheaper, Online gaming seems to be alot better on Xbox.
The xbox controller is better that the Dual Shock 3.
My XBOX360 failed about six months ago, I havent go around to getting it fixed but since it was the first model and I knew the later model had improvements I bought a new one.
I dont think I will replace the PS3 when it fails.

Possibly one of the most confusing comments i've seen on this forum.

And the PS3 definitely does not load faster than the 360, take a look at bayonetta for a quick example :P

What other aspects make it worth a purchase? I know a lot of people own both, so is it worth the money? There seem to be a lot less unique games on different consoles these days, are Sony going to be putting out anything amazing in the next year or two that I won't get elsewhere?

Change that to the next month or two, you have Heavy Rain and God of War III and already have MAG out in the last week. I have both, but only picked up my 360 last Septemer. The way I'd look at it is you're buying a really good Blu-Ray player for 300 quid and it also plays games. Sony have some nice exclusives coming up this year, and some great one already released.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,329 ✭✭✭Xluna

IMO it's not worth getting a ps3 if you own a 360 and vice versa. There's not enough exclusives on either system to warrant it and multi platform releases are virtually identical. The only exception I can think of is if you want a blu ray player and are a big MGS fan.

I'm thinking about picking up a PS3, mainly because it's free to play online and most people I know have a ps3. But €300+ for it seems a bit much just for that.

I had to replace my 360 AGAIN this week. My set up costs €260 for the console with a game, €70 for a wireless adapter, €45 for a LIVE membership and €15 for the play charge joypad kit. So in it's defence, the PS3 is cheaper to set up, for me anyway.

    It's also a better console.

Ive got both. Think one console is enough tbh, they are very similar. I prefer the ps3 though.

Possibly one of the most confusing comments i've seen on this forum.

And the PS3 definitely does not load faster than the 360, take a look at bayonetta for a quick example :P

I'm sure you find alot of things confusing.

I stand corrected on the loading speed,
I wonder would a game made for PS3 converted to XBOX360 have similar problems?
