Fish Oil.

I've managed to sort my diet out and i've started losing some weight, but on my non gym days I'm taking fish oil to supplement some good fats in place of carbs. My question is how much is safe to take? I have the seven seas cod liver oil capsules and according to that I should take one a day. However is it possible to take maybe 2-3 a day on non gym days if i have a low carb intake?

Any advice on this would be great.

    Cheers

Too much cod liver oil can be bad for you. I read that somewhere before and I'll dig it out. Running out the door now.

I've heard that as well, but I'm just thinking that 3 small caspules could hardly be a dangerous amount per day.

I currently take Eskimo fish oil which is a stable fish oil.
As far as I know all the research re heart attack prevention focusses on stable fish oils (taken from tissue of fatty fish) rather than cod liver oil which comes from livers of cod

What I don't know is whether the fish oil capsules/liquid (generic stuff in health stores) is as good as the branded stable fish oils such as Eskimo.

The Eskimo stuff is a lot more expensive which is not a sign of quality (the Eye Q stuff is expensive too and seems to be marketing based)

Anybody any views on the "best" fish oil for optimum health benefits balanced versus cost?

2-3 day as a minimum IMO and the cod liver oil thing is due to vitamin A and D content which a normal fish oil supplement will not contain.

For me 6-10g per day and i use

Absolutely bucket loads of research on the positive effects of omega 3's (fish oils) at higher doses.

Been using around 5g a day of this one of late but I'm going to switch back to around 2-3g of this stuff.

OP: What does the packaging say about dosage for the cod liver oil?

It says to take one a day. But I mean they're fairly small capsules. And if I do have 3 a day i'll have one with lunch and 2 more round 8pm...

Fish oil is no more "vital" than any other food. If you feel like taking some, then take it. If you feel like NOT taking some, then do that too.

There's a very powerful idea in the world at the moment that tries to tell pretty much everyone that what they're eating now is ****e and what people are selling (usually in handy to take pill format) is good. It's mostly rubbish. People are spending colossal amounts of money on things that are no more vital or healthy than eating some ACTUAL fish (there's a thought) and in many cases, not actually proven to be good for your health at all.

Transform, you say there is bucket loads of research, but how many of these stand up to scrutiny? How many of these studies are double blinded, tested against placebos, peer reviewed, meta analysed and then spat back out? A better question might be how many of these studies are sponsored directly or indirectly by companies with a direct or indirect link to the food supplement industry, which manages to keep this quaint association with old ladies preparing remedies in little cottages, yet is now worth billions.

But maybe I'm wrong, and maybe we're all meant to take everything like this and live until we're 150.

+1 on this. I'm aiming to eat fish (usually Salmon) 4 times a week of late.

This appears to be fairly factual.

You're not very good at the devil's advocate thing.

Well usually Devil's Advocates just say things for the sake of it, I happen to believe what I said. I'm not doubting that there's a lot of things we all might benefit from but to be frank I'm sick of being told what and what not to eat.

Bottom line, if all you fish oil takers live until you're 129 I'll have egg on my chin. Let's have a live off and see who lasts longest.

No it doesn't Khannie and that was never my point. My point is this idea of how we all "must" eat this or we're somehow being irresponsible. It's a personal choice but the health police are out. So as I've said, if you want to take fish oils, do, but don't tell me how "vital" they are and what the "minimum" is because the minimum is zero.

Although there are tonnes of research on the benefits of fish oil there is research indicating some dangers http://raypeat.com/articles/articles/fishoil.shtml

If you are taking a lot of fish oil, avoid Cod Liver oil as it contains a lot of Vitamin A, which is dangerous is large amounts. Try and find a fish oil product that contains little Vitamin A, which you can take a lot of.

Fish oil, or more specifically EPA, is one the best things you can add to your diet. By a long, long, long country mile.
