I've been living in England for a few months now and noticed a pretty ridiculous personalised licence plate a few days ago:

    'D5 APE'

Do you think I should have warned him never to go to Dublin...?

I'd be more worried about how Kildare people are going to feel about their county being renamed York... and joining the UK!

Best one I ever saw was in Vienna, the local Bakery was called Anker.

so the CEO had W-ANKER1 on his car, of course to a German speaker the word meant nothing.

There is the famous picture of a Florida licence plate on a Buick with the randomly allocated number of "A55 RGY". Problem is there's a big large orange (the fruit, of course) between the 5 and the R.

    Fu-Q is a sweet-ass awesome one.

If I had that licence plate I'd be so cool I'd like totally hang it on the wall in my parent's basement where I live and like so totally think about what kinda car I'm going buy when I save up my money from working nights at Kinko's.

    Totally.

    I don't understand.
You can keep the plate and transfer it onto any new cars you get for a nominal fee.

He's referring to the fact that personal number plates don't have the year of first registration of the car on them, there is a steady trade in NI plates for that very reason.

You mean so that the car doesn't look old?
Up North you can re-register your car whenever you want and get a brand new reg.
I've seen plenty of sad cases do it to make their two year old motor look new.

like ireland, many people have not got the money now to change their car every two years, so your five year old car still looks good with personalised plates, saying that a car flashed his lights at me in fleetwood this week,he spotted my kiss bll on my plate, when i looked at his plate,he had .... gay on it.

NI plates don't show the year first registered, what's happening is that they're selling the plates on and re-registering the car for profit.

They do, the first letter denotes the year of registration.
    E.g. in the reg' KLZ 1234' K denotes 2002.
Next year it would be 'LLZ 1234'.

You see these guys buying a new car and then applying for a new reg 2 or 3 years later to have a fresh reg.
Once the model of car hasn't been updated the car will appear to be new.
    Pretty pathetic.

I once knew a bloke down here who bought a new Passat.
The reg was something like 04-D-6767.
When the new year rolled round I spotted that yer man's reg had changed to 05-D-6767.
He tried to tell everyone he'd bought a new car.
A local Garda copped it and made him change it back after a few weeks.
    What an idiot.

Fair enough, I was under the impression that the first letter was just a serial index as in when the numbers got to 9999 the letter incremented.

They still profit from selling the plates to the mainland though, but it is still illegal to missrepresent the age of the car by putting a newer year reg on it!

Are you sure of this,i thought you couldnt get a reg newer than you car was? This is definatly the case in england.
And that northern marks just ran untill 9999 and then the next letter takes over, they used to use letters for years in england, but not in the north, unless its come in recently?
Also they usually keep over the first 999 of each series for sale at auction.
Some good,or naff depending on how you see it, english ones.
    CLA55Y(classy),60D(god)EEE333,HOP1N(hop in),MRL1P(mr lip),TAX1,

This is about as good as it gets in ireland, they are genuine plates

    Not up there.
If you imported a '94 car into the North today they'll give you a fresh reg with this year's letter on it.
There's nothing illegal about it, unless of course you tried to convince a prospective buyer that the car was newer that it actually was.

Down here if you import and '94 they'll give you a 94 reg.

To be fair the reg system that we have here is it one of the few things that we've gotten right.
It's one of the best and easiest to understand in the world.

The other poster did make a valid point though.
Changing the car's reg plate can make a big difference to the car's appearance.
I remember importing a 7 year old BMW before.
It looked well decent on the UK plate but when I put the Irish plate on it,
it suddenly looked alot older and less appealing.
Are you sure of this,i thought you couldnt get a reg newer than you car was? This is definatly the case in england.
100%, I've registed cars in the North myself.
If you register a car there today they'll give you a new reg with the most recently used first letter.

That means that the reg is not year of manufacture dependant it's just the next in the series!

The problem with our system is the reg plate snobbery that comes with having the year clearly displayed on your plate. How many eejits line up to buy new cars at the start of the year just so they can be current? I'd bet it's quite a few.

Of course it does insure people who don't have their heads up their behinds have a ready supply of idiots to eat up the depreciation on new cars before passing them on as bargains.

Ya but without the VAT its only 250k.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,833 ✭✭✭✭Armin_Tamzarian

I think the most expensive UK reg is F1, which cost £450k.
Most expensive in the world was £7million for 1.

At least I know what F1 means, what the hell does TP 1 mean?
If it said something like PIMP then at least it would be £250k well spent.

This is categorically and completely wrong. The leading letter is sequential, that is all. They move to the next one instantly on reaching *** 9500 in the sequence, no matter when in the year it is.

Seeing as theres about 30 trailing letter combos in use, the average person on the street hasn't got a clue what age a car is off its plate.

    Sequential like the years.
You can tell the year by the letter.
On the pre 2001 regs in England the first letter was incremented twice a year, regardless of whether the following numbers had reached 9500 or not.
Is the DVLNI system not the same?

The trailing letter combo denotes the county of registration.

The DVA (ex DVLNI) system isn't the same at all. The letters increment when they run out of numbers (they only go to 9500), and *only* when they run out of numbers.

For the third time on this thread, it has nothing to do with the years!

No, it's saying that the driver is a D5 ape. I don't know where you're from but the use of the word 'ape' is a light insult where I am from.

By the way everyone, well done for sticking to the theme of boards.ie - i.e. diluting a topic down so that you can all release pent-up anxiety/frustration by arguing childhishly with each other.
