Last night my iphone 3gs died suddenly. It is not jailbroken. It was charged. When I tried the reset (hold top button and home button together), it still wouldn't turn on.
I tried connecting to laptop and to charger plug. Still wouldnt turn on. It would just show the black screen with apple logo, then die completly again.
After hours of googling I found this fix:(5th post)

"Or try this. First open iTunes and connect your USB cord to your computer, but do not plug it into your iPhone. Then press and hold the home button on your phone while connecting the USB cord into your iPhone, while continuing to hold down the home button. Then click restore in iTunes. "

Worked a treat, retrieved all of my contacts, messages, settings, emails etc, just lost my apps, but their easy got again.:D

Hope this helps anyone with similar problem.

Thinking about that, but I needed my phone today/last night so decided to try and fix myself.
If it happens again I'll be straight back with it, don't worry.
