Locking down the Premiership

Apparently this was a topic of conversation on Talk Sport radio a few weeks back because one of the numpty Premiership Chairmen (Man Citeh's, I think) suggested that locking down the Premiership (i.e. no promotion or relegation) would be a good thing. Basically, it would be a more profitable thing.

If the 20 teams that were to make up 'the perpetual Premiership' were choosen today based upon a points system (which is based upon what they've won over the years), then this is how it would look...

Good idea? Or bonkers mad crazy?

*What i'd really like to know is how on earth Wolves are above Forest in that table!!

Everyone will agree it's bat**** crazy,
Stan Collymore was touting it as a great idea a while back.

It would kill the **** out of football.

Agreed Denis. It would stifle domestic football. Plus Championship teams would have nothing to play for. Can't believe they even entertained its discussion on primetime radio.

Ridiculous idea IMO - whats the point of football below the first tier then?

Also, wigan wouldnt be happy with that? 3 divisions demoted if this were to go ahead!!!

    terrible idea

might work in certain countries, but not in england where there are so many professional clubs with relatively decent infastructures which could easily be upgraded with the premiership money

We've won more than them and as you said it, it would be based on what teams have won!!

It's a really stupid idea, chairman should stick to looking after their own clubs affairs.

Oh no, Sepp is waaaaay out there. This is the man that said -

"Let the women play in more feminine clothes like they do in volleyball. They could, for example, have tighter shorts."

Blatter added: "Female players are pretty, if you excuse me for saying so, and they already have some different rules to men - such as playing with a lighter ball. That decision was taken to create a more female aesthetic, so why not do it in fashion?"

Absolute rubbish. Would ruin the whole league system. Ridicules.

Terrible idea but if it increases the top clubs profit margins expect to see it introduced.

Terrible idea. There'd be no fun on "survival sunday"...

That idea just gets rid of the competitive attitiude of the bottom clubs, if they know they would'nt go down there would be less drama involved in the game as teams would'nt have to consolidate a position inthe league.

    Stupid idea TBH.

so if a team have a terrible start to a season do they just roll over and start planning for next season as there is no threat to them??

That list would have Wigan in 4th division even though they've been a constant in the PL for a number of years now.

Shit idea but one that doesn't really contravene the direction that top-level (international and national) football is moving in.

Which league is it that kinda opperates like this - is it the Brazillian or Argentine (Argentinian?)

I think the relegation is done on a 3 year cycle - the teams that go down, go down based on the results over the previous 3 seasons. Something like that.

    How boring would that be
-"lads anyone wanna just give em a walkover today we know we're going to lose anyway, we can head down to the pub and watch the NL Derby instead ya?"

There actually would be some benefits from a closed 20 team league. It would make a draft system, similar to what is done in US sports, more possible, where the bottom team gets first pick at up and coming talent. Bring in a salary cap aswell, and after a few years we will no longer see the boring, futile, predictable competition that we have seen for the last 15 years!! 4 teams have won the league in the last 17 seasons, and the top 4 have been the same for the last 4-5 years. Predictable is not strong a word! Maybe a closed 20 or 30 team league could make the whole thing more competitive.

The Argentinian league uses this system (who said playing FM was a waste??)
