Fitting Mudguards on Defy

I recently purchased a Giant Defy 3 & got some cheap clip on BB mudguards.

But have found that their isn't enough clearance & so the front wheel is not spinning freely even with just the bracket attatched & no mudguard clipped on.

After some googling I found this thread on the roadcyclinguk.com forum. They seem to be saying the standard tyre's giant supply (kenda) are bigger than the usual 25mm, so clearance is very tight.

Just wondering if anyone has come across this issue before & if there is an easy solution without changing the tyres?

I'm a complete newb (fred?) to this lark so it's possible I'm just doing something silly. Thanks for reading.

I can't help with those mudguards, but I read previously that there are special mudguards available for the Defy (or SCR as I think it used to be called).

You might try this (e.g. third link down), or maybe call a Giant dealer (e.g. Cycle Superstore).

Yup there are specific ones for the Defy. Wheelworx have them. I'm contemplating getting a set myself.

The FCR (and I presume the SCR) came with 26mm tyres. I had Viper mudguards fitted to mine. Both were fine with the 26mm tyres but I'm now running 28mm. I had to fiddle with the mount bracket on the front (no stays) but I dismounted the rear and mounted it on the underside of my carrier instead. I did this primarily 'cos I broke a bit trying to reverse the mount bracket so the mudguard would sit further back as it wasn't keeping my back dry. I could probably have just fitted the 28mm tyre without moving the mudguard.

That said, I had to spend 20 mins in the middle of my first spin with the new 28mm tyres picking off the little moulding protrusions of rubber 'cos they were rubbing on the mudguard...

FWIW I was warned off the Giant branded mud guards by my LBS where I got my FCR3. A bitch to mount and even the slightest tip will have them mis-set and rubbing.

I went with these in the end:

    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Zefal_Croozer_Road_Front_Mudguard/5360044502/

They're more than adequate for keeping you dry but the bike does get filthy.

I have a set of Race Blades on my Defy - don't think that they were specially made, just standard issue local bike shop stock!

thanks for all the advice, as others have said the forum is an outstanding resource, especially for those just starting out.

Found a bike shop nearby who are Giant dealers so I'm gonna ring them first see what they say, & if they have anything like those ye have linked to.

Failing that I'll probably go with these

hmm that's strange, have you still got the standard kenda tyres?

I'll let ye know what the bike shop says anyway, maybe its something I'm doing...
