Hi guys. I'm looking to get a new general purpose knife that will serve me for hunting, fishing, etc. Does anyone know any good websites?
I don't want to buy something cheap that wont last but also don't have the money to commission a custom knife.

try A.G. Russell.com they have some fantastic knives there and they give a good steel guide so you know what you're buying

Id give Davey moore a shout...he made this knife that was raffled here not so long ago..He is in Clare and you can google his name to get his web site...
Or you can try here. Most of those lads are in the UK...

I`d personally go for Dave as I have met him and seen his work....It pure class.....

I have a few more names and addresses as I dabble in knife making myself...
So if you need more names give me a shout..

Thanks guys. I remember alright; I participated a bit in the thread. I thought I wouldn't have the money for one of his but today my girlfriend suggested getting me a knife off him for christmas (I know it would never be done in time but definitely worth the wait).
So I think I shall contact him and see how it goes:D.

That sounds like a nice pressie. Think everything is on a need to know basis when it comes to shooting and the fairer sex...
I've joined a range down my way too. Should be up and running after christmas at which point I'll be looking at getting a 22 pistol. That should prove a great hit with the super:rolleyes:.

You won't go wrong with a Helle knife. In my opinion they are superior to any other “production class” knife.
I got mine from "Greenman Bushcraft" here:

If you're not familiar with Helle knives, have a read here:

I do like the look of this one.

i can see it with a slightly longer blade(3/4-1") and with a half or full grind...
    The handle shape is sweet....
Would be a nice stalking knife me thinks with a longer blade and a taller grind...

This is the one I have myself, the "Kvernstein":

    http://www.greenmanbushcraft.co.uk/cutting-tools/knives/helle-knives/helle-kvernstein-knife.htm

I went for this one because of the stone pummel. It brings the balance point of the knife closer to the centre of the handle which allows the knife to sit in an open, upturned hand as though the blade were not there. This gives the knife the effect of wanting to "stay in the hand" and is easier to work.

That's a nice looking knife. Their knives seem very practical.

    Worth every penny mate...
Is that a fire stick in the sheath?
And is the top 1 inch of the blade sharp or is it more for aesthetics?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,102 ✭✭✭Hibrion

It is indeed Dwighet. Davy done it up for me with en elm handle to match the knife. The sheath for the fire steel is also detachable form the knife sheath which is handy.

The top grind on the back of the knife is asthetic and functional in that it gives a narrower point, but its not sharp. It really shows of the pattern of the steel, whcih you can't really see in my poor quality picture.
The knife itself is actually the damascus one from the original three Davy made for the thread. So far I havn't been able to put it to its primary role given the weather and all but I've done a bit of bushcrafting with it and a bit of rope work, knot tying and that, and it has come in handy. It is a very sharp blade and fits the hand well. The hollow grind is great, it holds an extremely sharp edge and in the damascus steel it is strong enough to feather wood etc. It really is a great material in a great knife.
Heres hoping I can get out at some stage and it might see its way through a few carcasses.

I'm very happy with it and I can tell you that it will be put to work as well as being a piece to look at, just as Davy intends for his knives.
You'll have to coax the missus into getting ya one for next christmas Dwighet!!
All the best and happy hunting.
