Upgrade from a free NTL service

    My friend has a basic package from NTL free of charge because they needed access to his property to run their cables.

    He wants one of the new recording boxes but if he goes through NTL it may affect his free package.

    Can he buy a recordable box online & will it work with his current free package or is he better advised to do it directly through NTL???

    The only recordable box he can legally buy online is some brand of DVR. He won't have access to the EPG (which is one of the biggest advantages of the UPC+) and he won't have dual record. I have a DVR already and I still think the UPC+ was an essential addition.

    if u friend orders it he/she will only pay about 50c a month as the concession of free tv is worth approx 24.50pm so that comes off the price of whatever package he/she orders

    The only boxes you can get legally to decode the Chorus NTL service are those which are provided by UPC. And the only box which legally combines a DVR and a DVB-C tuner, and can decode UPC digital, is the UPC Mediabox.

    I can confirm more or less what Campo says. If your friend has a contract with UPC/NTL that gives them the basic package free then it's only the extra that they need to pay which I think should be 5 EUR per month.

    Stand to be corrected, but if I'm not mistaken current copyright law assumes end-users to be authorised to decode a stream if it isn't encrypted - as some UPC channels like Euronews aren't (at least last time I checked). It may still violate UPC's terms of service anyway, but that's not illegal, just breach of contract.

    Not that there's much worth watching on the unencrypted channels anyway. And like I said I could be wrong anyway, since it was a while since I read the relevant act
