Thinking of taking the coach on one leg of the journey - is it hellish?

It's not that bad, or maybe I'm just nostalgic. For the time it takes, I'd recommend flying!

how long does it take and whats the price?

I did it in 1996! From Busaras to Victoria Bus Station was 11 hours, iirc. I'm sure it would be better now. The roads have improved greatly. Even the first stint from Holyhead to the border is quite easy now that they've widened the route. Back then it was single carriageway for most of the way to the border with England.

If you book through eurolines.co.uk you can get cheaper fares...i'm being quoted £12 London>Dublin

It's 12 hours but it looks like you have to wait in Holyhead for a few hours for the Ferry crossing.

You can also travel with virgin trains and get the ferrry (maybe not the same one/not from hollyhead) It is pretty reasonably priced as well and maybe quicker and more comfortable. I have never travelled it, but I have seen advertising for it in train stations in the UK.

The bus is a tough trip both mentally and physically, make sure you have a well stocked ipod and an interesting book!!! The worst bit is about an hour before you have to go back, when you reallise what you are facing into again!!

    Try the train:

Or just fly, I'd value my time and effort far more than a moderate saving.

I've gone both ways. The bus was hellish. Took the best part of a day and involved a fair amount of waiting around (I went one way from London - Dublin).

By comparison, I would highly recommend the ferry + train, especially if it's the swift ferry. I left Dublin city centre at 8am and was in London city centre at 3:30pm, which works out about the same when taking a flight (don't forget I'm talking centre to centre). It's a flat fare of 42 euro each way and there's none of the hassle of flying. The Virgin trains are fast and very comfortable.

used to do that route and dublin-manchester on eurolines quite a bit back in 1996-97 before the introduction of budget airlines. if you are used to being in a bus for a few hours then its ok. the ferry shouldn't be a problem, there are bars, restaurants, cinema on board to pass the time, its about an 8hr bus journey from holyhead to london and that included about a hour rest stop at hilton park motorway services just north of birmingham back in the day, of course not sure if they still stop there because they reduced the size of that establishment a few years back
