I bought a car in England. I followed all the guidelines on the Revenue web site. Went to register it today. Its a JBA FALCON first registered in 1979 .I went to the office in Wexford to pay my 50 euro and get a new Reg no. Girl behind the counter takes my money, issues a receipt and goes to her computer. She comes back and tells me that she doesnt have a code no for "That make".She explains that she will contact Rosslair and get a no. I leave the V5 and completed Import form with her.I then get a call telling me that because the car is a "KIT CAR" other details are required. I explaine that all I know is that the car has a valid V5 ( which is the English registration) that all details are on it.I know that it has had 9 previous owners, but no other details. She informs me that the car can be refused registeration in this country.
    Anyone know anything about this???

Was it built in 79?What extra info did she want?

You could end up paying a lot of VRT on that, they'll try and make out the car was built more recently than 1979 and charge you the VRT on that. They usually try and make out it's a collectors item and value it accordingly. Been there a few times myself.

Thanks for the interest lads. My main arguement will be.---- Valid V 5 document.Thats all that the Revenue requires. Nowhere on their site does it state that extra information is required for importing a car. After all-- if the V5 is the BIBLE then who are they to question the validity of the said document??? This car was recognised as a "ROADWORTHY VEHICLE" and taxed as such for many years in England who are THEY TO QUESTION THIS??!!!!!

As junky pointed out, theyl try and hang you on the fact the car may have been built after 79,its certainly a grey area though. If it has the reg and mechanicals of a 79 cortina,it should be as such,or else it would have had a Q plate?Or am i missing something?

It is a grey area but those later generation Range Rovers (the un-cloned ones) on the early chassis are glorified kit cars, and they get away with it

I always understood it to be from the date of first registration of the chassis

    its a grey area

try the ikcc boys they might be able to advise (althought they told me it was on the date of first reg on the v5)

In Ireland the reg is based on the chassis,in the UK it can be based on other mechanical parts which are totaled up to above a certain percentage, such as rear axel 10%,engine15 % and so on,what chassis has your kit car got?

I don't quite agree here, the rebodied "Range Rovers" REMAIN registered as Range Rovers, whereas cars like Marlin, JBA etc, use an existing chassis but are obtain a completely NEW indentity and a unique chassis number.

If the car would have retained the identity of a 79 Cortina, there would have not been an issue...

The VRT office have a policy that ANY kitcar, ANY car makes with names like Porsche, Lamborghini, Ferrari etc, will be passed on the head office and will not be issued with a reg number at the desk, regardless of how watertight the documentation is.

Is that a new thing? I've regg'ed a 911 and a Lotus at the desk. The 911 was a left hooker but on a UK plate, the Lotus straight UK car. Both were 30 plus and had no issue at all.

No, this is not a new thing, but your cars were 30 year plus car and they will usually be dealt with at the desk, since they're a flat rate of 50 euro's, but when VRT has to be calculated on a Porsche or Ferrari, this will have to be passed by Head Office in Rosslare.

    Right-- some more .
Had a meeting with a senior tax inspector.Told him that I am in full compliance with revenue guidelines, he did"nt disagree. I asked him what right the Revenue had to look for further information other than whats on the V5, he didnt know.I pointed out that nowhere on the Revenue site was any indication that KIT CARS were subject to other conditions. He seemed to be a nice man , and said he would look into it.---- Now the good bit
I"ve spent the whole day looking up EU rules on the Net.

There are 2 pieces of legislation
    OJ C 143 of 15/5/1996 and DIRECTIVE 1999/37/EC --- These can be seen---- Google ---- EURO-LEX-31996Y0513(01)- en
    EURO-LEX 3199l 0037.

My reading of these documents show that the lads in Rosslaire are in total breech of the rules.Anyone interested can look them up and see what you think.
