The nearest club that does BJJ I can think of is The Dog Pound Gym MMA club in Newry. That should be within 30 miles ? ( I'm from Dublin )

    You can reach Simon on 00 44 7784514750 or Andrew on 00 44 7810251501.

    What is "sports jitz"?

It appears to be the brand name for the clothing line connected to BJJ. I can't imagine that clothing line being popular here, too close to JIZ.

OP I'm not sure on the geography of N.I. but if your looking for Judo on Fridays in N.I. I'd highly recommend checking out Ren Bu Kan Judo Club.

tbo i dont know much about it as i have never trained in it, think the proper name is jukaroo or something along those lines. But the guy has a really good game and won the irish bjj open. Would be ideal for any one in newcastle he is on the GB team and has competed all over the world(in "sports jits")

Yea Vincent is associated with Juku Ryu Ju Jitsu in Larne and Seb Torres and the fellas from the Newry direction.

Sports Ju Jitsu is combat ju jitsu similar to MMA only with a gi and with a timed allowance on the ground.

Very popular with the Tai Jutsu and Karate Jutsu guys also - There is also national competitions with an Irish team. Head Coach for the N.Ireland team is Alan Mc Kee.

I think you're talking about the SBG Northside bjj open, not the Irish BJJ open.

The term is Sports Jujutsu. not Sport JuJitsu, not JITz nor Jits nor Combat Ju jitsu. See link,

    I train in Jujutsu.

I think you're talking about the Dublin BJJ open, hosted by BJJ Revolution.

All those terms are completely ambiguous and no standard exists. I'd go as far as saying Jujutsu is a meaningless term.

Usually, Jujutsu/Jiujitsu refers to "Traditional Jujutsu" which is basically like Judo and Karate stuck together with a healthy dose of "don't practice this because it could kill someone". Or Classical Jujutsu which is people trying to emulate the training they think took place in Feudal Japan.

Unlike Judo, there are no highly establish/recognised governing bodies at the national, continental or International stage. If somebody wants to call sport Jiujitsu (grappling) Jujutsu they really can, same goes for all the varieties and flavours (of which there are many) of these martial arts.

After reading the wiki link above. I think this sounds quite like the Ju-Jitsu Randori section that is held in the Irish Cup (Karate & Ju-Jitsu Tournament). Its held every year in the Basketball Arena in Tallaght.

I stand to be corrected but it essentially would be like semi contact Kick Boxing with controlled takedowns and limited grappling ? After reading the rules here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ju-Jitsu_International_Federation it sounds like that anyway.

It was the only competition I knew of run in Andy Ryans gym. Either way it's not the Irish BJJ open.

Upon closer inspection, this is actually what I'm doing.

LOL Apologises for not getting it exactly right but regardless of the exact terminology the sport exsists and the guys pre mentioned are all very capable grapplers so returning to the main post crosstrainer1 was asking about upping his ground game so people were suggesting coaches around that area.

On the off topic of the Sport JuJutsu heres some details of the head NI sports JuJutsu coach or which ever terminology you want to use for it -

Sensei Alan McKee has fought in 4 World Champs, 7 International Champs 26 National Champs Full / semi / Light contact winning Gold, Silver and Bronze. The JRJJC has won over 150 medals, Gold, Silver & Bronze in both junior and senior sections, to date in the above mentioned. The JRJJC is currently active on the MMA in NI and also is training the Norhern Ireland team for the next WCJJO World Champs in Las Vegas 2010.

Just passing on info - dont shoot the messenger lol

I saw the title of this thread and thought it was one of those "Daddy or chips?" questions. It's pretty much a given that on Friday night you've got to go out and choke somebody, but whether you want to do that at judo or zhu-zhitsu is a tough choice.
