Freeview HD box – available early 2010

    Freeview+ HD recorder – available Spring 2010

These products connect to a HD ready TV, but if you don’t already have an HD ready TV this is your chance to upgrade to a Freeview HD TV.

Freeview HD digital TV – available Easter 2010

Look out for the Freeview HD logo to ensure you have an approved product.

This is the supposed timetable for the availability of Freeview HD equipment from freeview.co.uk's own website. Since TV's were/still are widely sold here with DVB-T tuners, would it be correct to say that, by the Autumn of next year, TV's with DVB-T2 tuners would similarly be widely be sold here regardless of whatever standards are in place then for Irish DTT? (Same as what happens now).

At least one good unintended consequence would be that if DTT is still going here this time next year, it will be picked up by these new TV's. No more radios with large black screens sitting in the corner of your sitting room! :D.

Wonder what the price premium would be for these TV's over ones with DVB-T only tuners?

Complete with pictures of off-air reception. The brave man moves forward with DVB-T1 MPEG4 now!

2 Channels in HD - BBC HD and ITV HD lol. The rest remain in mpeg2.

Its a brave man that would spend a load of money on a DVB-T2 DTV (should one comes available next Easter) .

Some priceless comments on Nigel Whitfields article for reghardware.

What are you on. Still no DVB-T2 boxes out. Its about 2 years behind DVb-T/MPEG4 commerically/availability wise.

Freeview HD DVB-T2 TVs are not going to immediately replace Freeview TVs. Much like when Sky launched Sky HD over 3-4 years ago, they didnt stop selling Sky SD and Sky+. Dont expect too much here.

I would say 2-3 years before DVB-T2 is widespread in TV equipment.

Ha! They will be out first quarter next year. Preproduction boxes for Pace, Kaon, Humax and Philips are already being tested at DTG and Sony and Panasonic demonstrated preproduction IDTVs this week. Its been reported extensively all this week. Humax are giving a press conference on December 9th in London, four days from now to unveil their first DVB-T2 box. I'll post the link next week with all the coverage.

If they bring out a TV with Freesat/ DVB-T2 I will be in the queue for one.

That is in the works from two IDTV vendors.... Most of the Freesat software is being reused for Freeview HD as was seen at the demonstration at BBC Media Centre on Wednesday. Hence the FTTM for Freeview HD: I think this is not widely understood outside the UK.

I am clearly not saying there will be NO DVB-T2 TVs and I am well aware of the TVs and STBs about to come on the market. My point is that there will not be a mass immediate replacment of DVB-T with DVB-T2. It will be very gradual over a couple of years.

See how long it has taken for MPEG4 to become common in new TVs. It will be the same with DVB-T2. And on top of that expect to pay alot more in the short term for anything with DVB-T2

Does anybody know if the UK will use the same sytem as France? I bought a LG HD TV [M2262D] which has MPEG4 and TNT-HD. Will I need a new additional reciever or will the built in one work? Any comments will be welcome.

No, new box needed. UK to use a newer system. Google Freeview HD or DVB-T2.
