    Hi all.
I have a compaq HP machine that has

    (1) broken screen
    (2) no charger
    (3) a clicking hard disk for 4 seconds when switched on, then an immediate shut down and power off.

Now I cannot tell what else is wrong with it until I boot it up.

I have a spare LCD screen, I have another charger that is 12 volt 50-60hz that seems to charge it a trickle.

    Where should I start.

    the Bin.

Your first step should be a 2.5" External enclosure. Remove the hard drive it try to load it via USB on another computer to backup the files and check the health/status of the drive. Cost to replace 80gb drive would likely be cheap enough.

Spare laptop screen or External monitor? Sh!t, if you have a laptop panel floating around, might as well make use of it. Is the screen cracked or is it simply not lighting? The displays power inverter may be at fault for the screen/image not powering up or showing. That will set you back at least 50-80.

Do not use a charger that is not designed for your laptop. If anything get a universal charger and set it to your laptop's specific requirements, listed on the bottom of the unit or on the original charger. Another 80-120 euro.

The battery could be shot. A replacement will cost you easilly as much as 100 euro, depending on cell count.

All in all you could be looking at as little as a tenner for a hard drive enclosure or as much as 300-400 euro of repairs.

    No backup required.

    External monitor

Yea I'm beginning to like your 1st prognosis.

Thanks for advice. Bin it is.

OF course you can always pick it apart and sell the scrap: individual components usually sell for more than the whole thing put together.
