Buying Macbook pro in the US

    Hi guys.

My sister is going over to the US shopping after xmas and I plan on getting her to pick up a Macbook pro 13" for me when she is over there.

I have looked into it a bit and know I will need an adapter for the two pin plug but as far as I can see the power adapter itself will be fine for use at our voltages. I also know the keyboard will be slightly different. Both of which I can easily get over when saving around 400 euro.

The most question I have really is can she just walk in and buy it on the day in an apple store or does it have to be ordered and picked up on a different day. Ideally I would like to upgrade to 4G of ram but I think this would definitely not be possible to organize over the few days she would be there.

If there are any other issues with buying a US spec one please let me know.

    Thanks

Keyboard will be US layout, but you can change that in software settings yourself.

The biggest issue is that you may have to pay VAT and Import Duty payable on the Macbook which means you wouldn't make much of a saving at all.

Apart from the plug and Enter/Shift key differences she will just be able to buy it over the counter in an Apple store (or other shops), but only in the configurations they sell on line.

Ditching all the packaging and bringing it home in a cheap laptop bag as hand luggage may lower her chances of being noticed by customs.

You will have to declare that going back into the country, under irish law. And the tax you pay will be pretty steep. Not enough to really justify getting it afaik.

Power supplies are dual voltage so that isnt a problem. However I note that my HP laptop supply - while the Brick is Dual Voltage, the cord is not. Which is only rated for 120v. That might have something to do with why im on my 3rd charger. For the extra 5 euro though just buy a UK version of the supply cable when you get it home. I've learned my lesson with Pin Adapters.

    Thanks for the reply's.

I didn't think there would be a problem with customs(even in its box but wrapped up to look like a gift) she was over twice last year and my parents were also over separately and they had no problem walking straight through customs with lots of purchases. I might get her to remove the packaging all the same just in case.
