    Quote the raven...
Timing is an important factor when it comes to documentary filmmaking. If you can tackle a relevant topic at just the right moment, you may suddenly find your movie gaining exposure overnight. Such is the case with the makers of the upcoming documentary Don’t You Forget About Me, which explores “the influence and absence of John Hughes”. With the unexpected news of Hughes’ death this week, they’ve decided to dedicate the entire film to his memory, and throw together a rough trailer that shows off footage from this work in progress.

In addition to interviewing filmmakers who have been influenced by Hughes (such as Jason Reitman and Kevin Smith), Toronto actor/director Matt Austin and three friends actually travel to Chicago to try and meet John Hughes in person. They also hope to get to the bottom of his sudden and mysterious disappearance from Hollywood. For more info, and to keep up to date with the progress of the film, check out their production blog or the official website at www.dontyouforgetaboutmethemovie.com.

Voice of a generation for sure. Everyone has got to have at least one JH movie they love! Really looking forward to seeing this.

Can't check out trailer (in work) - but it sounds great.

Absolutely huge John Hughes fan so I'm looking forward to it!

I like the idea of the documentary but the trailer really does nothing for me.

    Bump for this..

Watched it last night and really enjoyed it.

Plenty of interviews with the 80's greats in there including Judd Nelson, Alan Ruck, Mia Sara, Kelly LeBrock, Andrew McCartney, John Kapelos, Ally Sheedy and Ilan Mitchell-Smith. Not forgetting Roeper & Ebert and Kevin Smith have too.

Watching it and various snippets of Hughes movies made you realise how fantastic the 80's teen films were.. and how vapid and superficial they are now.

Is this the guy who made great 80s films and terrible 90s films and then did nothing?

    No, not exactly.

He stopped directing after 'Curly Sue' in 1991. His damn strong directorial career was as follows:
    Curly Sue (1991)
    Uncle Buck (1989)
    She's Having a Baby (1988)
    Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987)
    Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)
    Weird Science (1985)
    The Breakfast Club (1985)
    Sixteen Candles (1984)

He also wrote these films and a handful of other 80's classics including 'Christmas Vacation', 'The Great Outdoors' and 'European Vacation'.

In the 1990's, he wrote mainly kids films - most notably 'Home Alone' (and numerous sequels) and '101 Dalmations'. He then penned a couple of screenplays under the pseudonym Edmond Dantes (after the protagonist in 'The Count Of Monte Cristo).

But he was still writing screenplays (out of the public eye) up until his death ('Drillbit Taylor' was his last published screenplay in 2008).

Baby's Day Out! I knew it! RedLetterMedia recently did a review of that film. Man.....

    'Christmas Vacation'
    'European Vacation'
    'Home Alone 1'

That's a damn fine list of films. It is odd how he stopped being attached to great films after 1990 though.

Well.. the documentary goes into it briefly -
basically, he didn't have a good experience in Hollywood. He then quit Hollywood to spend time with his family, but he more or less completely cut all ties in Hollywood to do it.

There are people he worked with who haven't seen him or spoke to him in 10 - 15 years.. and they have tried contacting him.

He also stopped doing "original teen movies" - his bread and butter (and the genre that he could identify with best) and seemed to write nothing but vapid kids film. Maybe he reached his peak.. or maybe there's something else to it. We'll now never know!

    It's actually quite sad really!

I'm impressed that the boards discussion page is on the first page of results when you googlesearch
John Hughes Documentary "Don't you forget about me"

the reviews weren't that complementary, saying 'you should know this stuff already'..... I couldn't find a legal way to watch the film. Not even on Amazon. Oh well :(

Don't get me wrong - the documentary has nothing specifically "new" or "shocking" in it.

But it's an interesting and engaging way to spend 70 minutes. I think some people were expecting far too much from it.

What I'd say is: if you're a John Hughes fan, you'll probably enjoy it. If you're not, there's really not much in it to change your mind!

Yep, although a lot have sold out and they've had to put the film on in extra screens. I know it happened for Predator. :)

Is this out on dvd or a cinema release?

    I hope to see it.

I loved a lot of his films and I thought he was legendary filmmaker

    Interesting Tidbit
He only directed eight films. He wrote 30 others that were produced, 16 of them in the '80s, 13 in the '90s, and contributed characters or ideas to a handful of others

It's only out on DVD in the US (Region 1).

I sincerally doubt it'll get a release over here it got a only limited run in cinemas in Canada, and was only aired on TV / released on DVD in the US.

Just want to say I am a big John Hughes fans, saw this doc today and my verdict is I wouldn't recommend it. It's sloppily put together, badly researched, full of irritating cast members
and (as expected) doesn't deliver on the ending it keeps hinting at / hoping for.
    .

It's basically just a quartet of geeky stalkers riding around in a van for 70minutes and could barely even be called a documentary. I do think it's just fortunate in it's timing and would never have seen the light of day had Hughes not passed.

Hughes fans, don't waste your time with this one. Hopefully someone will make a proper doc on the guy, with some real insight.

I think this is the problem..

.. there won't be such a documentary. Hughes was incredibly closed-off for almost the last 20 years of his life.

    is that weird ???

No it's not weird. Although not to labour the point, but there's a group on facebook that lets people meet up and go see films together and then go for a drink to talk about the movie afterward.

That's who I went to see it with anyway.

Think Wednesday was the last screening. Raging I missed out on Pretty in Pink personally. Just couldn't find the time to get to it.

The movie club is also on meetup.com by the way:
