What do you think ,im on 31k in a permanent job in dungarvan co waterford , but considering leaving it to go to an 11 month contract job in dublin with the possibility of permemancy after the contract expires for 33k plus 33% shift?

Basically I would be getting an extra 13k in dublin but I wonder would the extra cost of living in dublin just take up that extra 13k?

Yeah, go for it, just let me know where you are working first so I can apply for a permanent job!

Definitely not worth it...hell for Dublin you'd want to be getting nearly double your money.
By the time you add accomodation plus the cost of living in dublin you'll be down.
And anyone that leaves a permanent job right now is a bit mad :D

Will you get the shift premium all the time or only when working odd hours? Do you get it if you are on a 9-5 shift?

Seriously consider the job security issues. What happens if the contract finishes after a few months because they arbitrarily decide you are unsuitable?

The extra cost of living in Dublin is an issue, but it depends on your cost base in Dungarvan.

Will you be travelling every week?

ive come to learn that being a contractor earning more money is not what its cracked up to be... Any extra you will earn will have to be saved for when your contract expires and you are unemployed looking for another permanent job.

The minimum you will pay on rent alone in dublin will be 6k... not to mention the cost of living being higher. i would stay where you are...

    Hi op,
I think you would be nuts no offense. Most contract jobs they can leave you go for no reason with no notice/maybe 1 week.
31k is good money in this recession, beats €204 on the dole, cost of living in dungarven would be cheaper than living in dublin too.
Good luck what ever you decide.

It depends on whether you are an employee on a temporary contract, or whether you are a real contractor.

The former are paid through the company payroll, and pay PAYE, and the company pays PRSI contributions (ie "stamps"). They have standard employee rights - but remember that for the first 12 months, employees have very few rights!

The latter invoice the company, or perhaps an agency or umbrella company monthy, and get paid when the company pays, and don't usually get any PRSI "stamps" (I believe it's possible to be an employee of the umbrella company, and pay the employer PRSI contribution yourself, though it does end up being more expensive this way if you're doing it long term). And it's very wise to have professional-indeminty insurance, and (depending on the circumstance) public-liability as well.

With the sort of numbers you're talking about, I'm suspecting that you've been offered the first type of deal. There's no way I'd go from being a permie to a temp in this market, unless the money was a LOT better than you're talking about.

So - unless you really hate your current job/life - I'd say "stay".

With out a shadow of a doubt stay put. Definitely not worth risking a permanent job.

From someone who is contracting for 5 years now I would say STAY PUT !!

Its not worth the hassle. I would happily take a cut for a permanent job.
