Company Law - Text Books

    Hi,

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

I was just wondering if anyone may be able to give some advice on two text books on company law.

I am looking at Courtney, Law of Private Companies, 2nd Ed 2002 & Keane, Company Law, 4th Ed, 2007.

Does anyone know which of the two would be best for an undergraduate studying this subject. I asked the lectures who seem to be divided. Looking at Keane it seems more condensed but I know the Law Society recommend Courtney even though its 7 years old.

Some people I asked said Forde, but that does not seem to be mentioned anywhere, reading lists etc.

Both are around 170 euro and I am just wondering which to invest in.

    Cheers.

I think either are great textbooks. Dunno anything about Forde's book. I had Keane back in the day - I found it pretty straightforward and accessible. Courtney's is a much larger book and I use it these days when I need to. I'd say it's aimed more at professionals.

For me I'd recommend Keane to a Student. Worked for me anyway!

I would say you should work off both of Courney & Keane - Courtney is excellent all round but dates back to 2002, Keane (also very good) is more recent. If you had to buy one as a student I'd buy Keane as it is more up to date. If you only had time to read one, I'd probably go for it anyway.

As a student, definitely Keane. It is simpler and more up to date, but will contain nearly everything (and more) that you will need as a student.

For practitioners, Courtney's book is absolutely indispensible, with Keane's or Forde's book at hand also to keep things up to date.

    Hi, Maximilian, Reloc8 & Tester46,

Thanks for your input I appreciate this.

I am going to go with Keane (for the moment & maybe Courtney next, if santa is good lol)), I did find it very easy to read – although I am sure both texts are equally great pieces of work, but as 2nd year student I think Keane is my best bet.

    Thanks again for your advice.

    Cheers,
    :D
