I just don't fancy driving an auto, esp a slow auto.

Is there a reason he need an SUV? Otherwise a smaller car would probably be more economical. He can still get auto diesel if that's the only requirement.

Well the main criteria is less than 2.0cc , auto ,diesel with a buget of 5k approx.

There doesen't seem to be alot to choose from in the market at the moment !

    if he's looking at a land rover maybe a discovery 3 with a 3L Auto Diesel would be nice ? TDV6 ?

Passat, Golf, Bora, Octavia, Toledo, Leon all spring to mind straight away. Ignore the freelander. What about a rover 75? BMW engine but without the turbo issues

Very few of these available in diesel auto. With regards reliability I doubt they would be much better/worse than than a freelander. I just thought the freelander looked good value.

Dont think he would appreciate getting a rover , very bad experience with one previously

I cannot imagine a Freelander being more reliable than a Rover 75.

There are very few diesel autos that fit into your criteria. A freelander will never be good value. Woeful build. The 75 is a thoroughly decent bus though. Much, much better than a lot people think. Was in a 9 year old one recently as a passenger and was seriously impressed.

What about the Santa Fe , they also come in 2.0TD with auto. Very reliable cars.
