It's a sad story. Gastric bypass isn't a miracle cure and she seems very level headed.

It's hard to feel sorry for her really, she used to eat 15,000 calories a day! Bloody hell!

    but... would ya????

Michelin employee sacked after gastric operation, I wonder why?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,789 ✭✭✭✭ScumLord

    She's 17!!

I'd hope the doctors are telling her that if she continues to lose weight the fact she's so young would probably mean the skin would eventually contract. She's only half way there and shouldn't be upset just yet.

Stupid newspapers always have to find the bad in everything.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,675 ✭✭✭TechnoPool

she would probs be dead by around 35-40 if she had not have had the operation no pleasing some people.

and the see through bra :(

maybe it takes 5 years to loose the handles, then again she got pregnant so it's not like she isn't getting any attention

of course it's the dailymail which isn't exactly a paper of record

shes 19 now btw. its been two years since the op and not much has changed in her, apparently

her skin will tighten up eventually but probably not all the way

i imagine however much she got paid for that article though would go good way to paying for the plastic surgery but she should lose the rest of the fat first

i really really hate tabloid news

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 779 ✭✭✭papajimsmooth

I assume she is selling her story to the rags to pay for some of her plastic surgery. She will probably throw out another one in a months time about how she has found love and voila operation paid for.

She's "too ashamed" to go swimming in public but yet she takes off most of her clothes for a newspaper article.

There's so many Daily Mail links posted in AH, I feel like I'm inadvertently reading it. Would you define this as being a victim of passive stupidity?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 20,366 Mod ✭✭✭✭RacoonQueen

She should have been told that at the time, surely they informed her she'd be left with a load of loose skin? At 16 it should have been exercise and strict diet...not surgery. I can't believe how much money the NHS spends on fat people, it's staggering.

15,000 calories a day? Bloody hell I struggle to eat 2,000 never mind when I've been for a long run and need to eat more than that. What on earth was she eating to get 15,000 calories a day.

    8 mars bars!

I can only manage one and i feel bloated/sluggish.

Maybe she is hoping the article is read by a plastic surgeon who will do it pro-bono but i doubt many plastic surgeons read the Daily Mail :pac:

Christ, 15,000 calories a day. No pity for her whatsoever.

She didn't make the slightest attempt to look after herself, and now she's a mess and can't have kids. Go figure.

What did she actually eat though? 15,000 calories could translate into a wide range of things.

you can't burn off 15,000 calories

That's nearly three times more than people have budgeted for hauling sleds across Antartica - IIRC the calorific expenditure below are probably at the limit of what is humanly possible
    http://www.ar.co.za/articles/energy.html
ENERGY ON THE ICE: self-sufficient trans-Antarctic crossing
In 1985 Robert Swan, Roger Mear and Gareth Wood undertook a one-way self-sufficient expedition to the South Pole, hauling sledges carrying all their food and gear. They covered the 900miles to the Pole in 70 days (approx. 13 miles/day) expending 5500-6000kCal/day. They each lost around 6.5kg in body weight.

Ranulph Fiennes and Mike Stroud used these results to plan for their 1991 self-sufficient trans-Antarctic crossing. They had calculated 6500kCal per day to be their ideal intake as they would travel a greater distance to traverse the Antarctic continent from the Weddell Sea to the Ross Sea in 100days. Limited by weight they would be able to haul on their sledges and the volume of gear they would be able to fit on it, they decided to compromise on 5500kCal/day, accepting the resulting body-weight losses.

But, they had not factored in that they would be hauling for more hours each day (10-12) than the members of the 1985 expedition. They had also assumed that they would be working at 40% of their maximum aerobic capacity and that the first 250-miles across the Weddell Sea ice-shelf would be easy. But, the ice was not smooth creating friction on their super-slick sledge skis and the ice shelf was split with great crevasses. Add elevation gain and driving winds in which they were struggling to do 1.5miles/hr and it is little wonder that their energy expenditure often exceeded 8000kCal/day. From Day 20-30, climbing up the Ice Shelf onto the plateau, Fiennes and Stroud expended 10670kCal/day and 11650kCal/day respectively, while ingesting only 5500kCal/day.

She never would have lost the weight through exercise and healthy eating because she was too lazy and too dependent on eating a high intake of calories.

She also won't be able to tone up her stomach now, she might have some chance toning her legs and arms with weights and running but she can do a millio sit ups a day and she won't tone her stomach area, there is simply too much loose skin which has lost it's elasticity.

She needs to get it trimmed off, but that will leave her with a big scar around her waist area and she will probably be in the paper crying about her looks again if she had it done.

Moral of the story? when you are young eat less crap and be more active

Actually I can sympathize with her. In that the surgery has replaced one disfigurement for essentially another. And 15k calories is a true Eating Disorder. Not exactly the guy who eats 2k calories then sits on his lazy ass for 14 hours. /looks at self

are you a plastic surgeon? I dont see why they couldnt leave the scar along the spine etc. - but im not a doctor!

She likes the fact that she is healthier & will life longer, but wants to get her curves back coz her skin is drooping like an old elephant. That's understandable.

But there's an easy & cost effective solution... a simple operation to install a valve & give her an air pump. Bob's yr uncle.

    Cost of operation = €300
Cost of Air Pump = €30
Cost of Maintenance = €10 per year (puncture repair kits)

The scar is on the front of the body as it is an abdominoplasty, the surgery takes place around the abdomin. You can't just take skin and pull it around so that it streches to her back and then have it on her spine, where would her breasts and naval area go?

A surgeon will create incisions to remove any excess skin and fat from the stomach region, tighten the abdominal muscles, and reposition the navel therefore the scars will be at the front, you will find that she doesn't have much loose skin high up in her back, but if she did that would require a different operation.

Here is a video I just searched for on youtube to give you an idea of how a scar would look on someone who had a full abdominoplasty procedure.

    No.

There was a programme on Discovery Health or something a few weeks ago about a teenager in America (quelle suprisé) who had a similar weight problem and underwent the same surgery. He then had the same problems with excess skin and so on.

3 months later, he underwent plastic surgery for the excess skin and looked perfectly normal after it; minimal scarring (barely noticable, even under the surgery's powerful lights) and you'd never know he had at one time weighed something like 50 stone or so.

The paper story money should cover the cost of her plastic surgery to remove the excess skin and such.

And if she sees fertility experts and OB GYN doctors, they can probably help her conceive children if she wants to.

The NHS was kind enough to give her the bypass themselves. She's gotta take at least some responsibility for her actions, and pay for it herself.

mean while over at news of the world Last Feburary - with normal pictures

    http://www.newsoftheworld.co.uk/news/187905/Britains-fattest-teen-Malissa-Jones-loses-20-stone-in-a-year-with-gastric-op.html
Now she is saving to have a private op-a full body lift and tuck-to remove one stone of excess sagging skin caused by her dramatic weight loss.

She said: "I've discovered a whole new world. I'm out every weekend clubbing. I've had a lot more boyfriends because I feel much more attractive and confident."

Any update on where she's at now ?
