Per, November 2009: Military Simulation airsoft
Per: Units of toy soldiers skirmish over imaginary battlefields, complete with advanced rules for firefights, objectives, intelligence, explosives and even airstrikes. The unusual part is that this time, the toy soldier is you. Shane, Dave and humbug meet with a sniffly DoC from the Irish Airsoft Association to take a look at running about for wagamers.

Have any of ye listened to this and if so what did ye think of it?

It was witty & informative - bloody nerds couldn't manage a conversation about airsoft without mentioning orcs though!!:pac:

Dave's use of the word 'basically' rivalled the body count from an Arnie movie although I suppose it's impossible to describe airsoft for 45 minutes without using it at least once!:p

Gerrout: the self-confessed 'coolest man on earth'!! He kept the best bit till the end!:D:D

Well it's a regular pod cast aimed at the 'gaming comunity', some gamers are nerds ( not all ), some gamers are airsofters, I think it's a cross over which is growning, could well do so even more after that podcast and there was even a stall at Gaelcon this year selling airsoft gear.

Being a bit of an all round gamer myself I find it odd when airsoft is refered to as a sport rather then a range of games with airsoft guns, but I do totally understand the wonderful effort and work that goes into the replica gun and that they aren't just grown up nerf guns :P.

I guess for me airsoft sorta falls between gaming and reinactments groups esp when I heard about the 'Nam events, still it's something I look forward to trying out at some stage.

Well with the recent FIS recognition, airsoft officially IS a sport in this country!:)

So now that you have listened to our nerd Dave explaining it and giving you all the info you have NO excuse not to try it now!

Ahh, they just call it a sport because it makes them feel less chubby. Paintball's a sport, airsoft's totally a game - and that makes airsofters NURDS! Let's shoot some orcs.

I thought you preferred shooting mildly irritating guns at Eldar.

Actaully the larp scene in this country is pretty small, unless you consider airsoft as larp :P

I certainly know better then to think that most airsofters are twats playing dress up with gas/battery powered 'guns' playing weekend soldiers, and I certainly didnt' throw that sterotype around, so have some class and don't poke fun at hobbies or sports you know very little about esp as you never know who amoung you started out as a gamer and is now also an airsofter.

I tought the podcast was pretty good but I don't know enough from an airsoft point of view which is why I tought I'd start a thread here and see what you tought of the podcast, I didn't start a thread so that posters could take shots at gamers.

I'd say there is more than a handful of former LARP types floating about.

I used to be big in to the Lorien Trust and Camarilla games myself.

then again every time your doing an impression or playing a mil sim scenario your bring in a type of larping, i would say larping is a large part of airsoft, anyone playing pysops in berget are larping to some extent :)
playing dress up with gas/battery powered 'guns' playing weekend soldiers

where as i would say that is 80% of airsofters i;ve meet ;)

The Lorien Trust runs in the UK, there are enough larpers in this country to have such a big event, there aren't enough larpers to have the type of events which are held and run by airsofters in this country never mind the places to go play airsoft or to even have an online community like this forum.

Larpers are a minority with in the irish gaming community and most of the rubbish about lapers comes from america where I am sure there are wackjob airsoft fanatics but no one tars all irish airsofters as being the same.

And the lads who run the adventuring party seem to have promoted airsoft in general in a pretty positive manner with the podcast which I think is a good thing.

Sorry if you took my post up wrong Thaedydal - I should have added a ':D' as i was only having a LOL with that pic, not a go at you!

Dave (who was interviewed) is a team-mate and I actually have a licence to pull the p1ss out of him :P

Who was the other guy on the tape? I know dave and shane, the other voice sounds familiar but im not sure who it is.,

If its a thing aimed at introducing gamers who know nothing about the game then its pretty good, theres a few giggles in there aswell.,:)

As an airsofter though, its pretty lacking in information and has a single point of "what is airsoft" to it. That said though, It isn't aimed at us who are already experienced in the game is it?

whats the plan with these? is it going to be a follow up thing? is it going to be aimed at airsofters or just a gamers thing?

"Tape", jeez. Real purists get the gramophone version.

humbug you wouldn't know, the other one is Dave who's in the Jebrovian National Army and has a Jing Gong G36C from you.

Sure isn't. The podcast's a gaming thing that comes out weekly and deals with table-top role-playing games, table-top wargames, live-action role-playing games, board games and to some extent card games, so that's the audience. This episode was related to one we did some time ago on the Lorien Trust LARP, and we'll cover the Camarilla at some point and maybe the Society for Creating Anachronism. Sort of sub-communities, get a look inside, type of thing.

Ah i see, nice one shane.,:)

I thought it was going to be something along the lines of airsoftology, i just assumed so because someone mentioned there might be an irish airsoft pod cast not long ago.,:)

PS: Sorry about the "TAPE" comment, but thats what the cops call it when they tell me i have the right to remain si... anyway, good job.,:D

Sorry, didn't get to finish that post there. (game started)

My own intention is to start considering airsoft a type of game that we cover, alongside LARP and board games and all, and just talk about it when relevant as another gamey thing. There's some dissent about that between the hosts yet and we haven't resolved anything, so that might not happen. A follow-up in the future is a possibility.

It won't be an airsoft podcast though; I have thought about the idea a bit in the past to start a separate one since I already have the infrastructure, but I don't have the time to devote and I can't really think of a decent format. News and reviews are covered grass-roots style here on Boards and others like it, the recording equipment doesn't travel well to outdoor locations to cover events, Take AIM covers the goings-on in Ireland better than I could.

Just because I can't think of a good idea doesn't mean there isn't one though. Open to suggestions, and willing to help anyone who wants to give it a shot (there's a bit of a learning curve, getting into it).
