    Hi all,

just wondering if there is any way of gaining access to a database of unfurnished apts in Dublin - daft has a few but they are very difficult to find - i know that unfurnished is not the norm in ireland - why i don't know  but anyways does anyone know of where one could find a site that deals with both furnished and unfurnished apts?

    thanks.

There's no better site than Daft, furnished or unfurnished. There is a checkbox for unfurnished only on the advanced search. Whether agents will enter the listing accurately is a whole other matter.

As you acknowledge yourself though, the reason you don't see many is there aren't many. Unfurnished just isn't how landlords do it here. Hopefully with the arrival of Ikea and the availability of cheap decent quality furniture landlords may cater for tenants who have their own possessions and don't want the grubby, garish 3 piece suite they've had in their rental flat for the last decade. Or at least they might buy some new furniture themselves.

I wouldn't be afraid to ask landlords to remove the furnishings if you find a place you otherwise like. Just don't be suprised if most of them refuse, you can only ask.

You could also try asking around with letting agents to see if they have anything on the books or anything likely to come on board. It is a niche market here though. Renting in Ireland, through public opinion, poor legislation and other reasons is a relatively downmarket way to live compared to our European neighbours. The average renter is assumed to be a student/young/careless/feckless. Which means a) The standard of furnished dwelling for let is quite low; and b) Any renter who might like to own their own furniture is a rare beast, and isn't catered for generally.

It is a renters market. I would say that any landlord who refuses a tenant because the tenant would like the furniture removed is nuts in this climate.

I wouldn't go looking for unfurnished aparments. Just find the place you like, and then tell the landlord/agent that you will only sign a lease and take the place if they remove all the furniture as you have your own.

Worst they can say is no, and it's their loss. You will definitely find a willing landlord.
