BSG one of the most unbelievably underrated shows

So from a couple of suggestions on this fourm and one of the lads I sat down a couple of weeks ago and said I'd give the "new" Battlestar Galactica a go seeing as I liked the show space above and beyond when I was younger.

Anyway, couple of weeks and 3 or 4 episodes a night later I just finished it. I'm simply stunned this this show isn't regarded as one of the best ever made by everyone.

Right or wrong and I'm well aware people have their issues with it but I used to use lost as a benchmark in which to measure a new TV show I think now BSG is the new one. IMO its simply flawless.

In summary, if anyone reading this hasn't watched BSG yet then I would plead with them to give it ago because really thinking about it I can't think of one episode I didn't really like.

Now I'm moving onto Jericho but what will I do after that :(

Check out Caprica. You might enjoy it.

Back to BSG. Seasons 1&2 were good and deserved the hype. Three was all filler no killer and 4 was ok. The one thing that turned me off the whole show was how they wrapped up Starbuck's story line.

    You buy that?? Really?

um...Battlestar IS regarded as one of the best t.v. shows ever made. it's just not too big over here.

i hope you like Jericho, it's like Lost, only good.

I find as a whole, BSG is one of the most stunning peices of television I've ever seen[went through a major dip in quality in season 3 though, but for the most part got back to a high level before the end].

But its hardly underrated, the majority of people who have seen it sing its praises from the rooftops.

I fell asleep near the end of episode one. I hate sci-fi.

    Just to clarify,

When I say underratted I mean it should really have the kind of fanbase that the "big" shows such as lost and prison break have. In that pretty much anyone who watched TV has seen them.

i agree, Season 3 dipped somewhat but knocking them out so quick you harldy notice ya know? The 4 or 5 episodes together in and around scar and the black market in season 2 are bar none the best back to back episodes I have ever seen

EDIT: I'd gigve it another go pickarooney, I'm not a huge fan of sci-fi either TBH

I'd agree it's not really underrated - but it did suffer from a lot of people taking an "I don't like sci fi" approach and not giving it a chance, but it's so much more.

Some of the episodes were among the finest I've seen on any show - the themes dealt with and plotlines were amazingly well done. Seriously, some BIG themes:
civil liberties was a big one, mutiny on the BSG, fixing elections... The issue of the suicide bombings (by the good guys) and the resistance on New Caprica was a standout for me.

But, season 3 varied too much in quality, and unfortunately the whole thing just started to unravel for me towards the end. There's a great essay on the ending here (warning, it's long and contains lots of spoilers, obviously. It's a reflection on how good I thought it was that led me to being so disappointed.

I think the whole BSG greatness is enhanced by the soundtracks. If you haven't checked them out then you're missing out.

I think the first two seasons were excellent but that it really dropped a lot about a third of the way into season three. It struggled with some poor soap opera moments and the plot, as it was, unravelled a bit. There was a bit of a lack of direction (indicated by the writers themselves admitting they were making a lot of it up as they went along), although they did a fine job tying it up with the finale - even if certain character arcs played out oddly.

Funnily enough I think it's a tad over-rated in the sci-fi circles. There's some excellent TV in there but there's a fair share of emo crap.

Not the first time I said it.. but I tuned out after the the boxing episode (which I couldn't even make it through) and never finished it.

I really loved BSG. However Season 3 fell apart after a promising start and season 4 was hit and miss. I really didn't like the direction it took in the end. Far too chiched and a real waste.

I was actually going to mention that episode in my OP as the worst by a mile, I really can't believe you couldn't stick with it though. Pity actually cause even though not as good as season 2 season 4 brought it back up.

See it all kind of just went as one giant episode to me cause I watched nothing else really since the first episode so I guess as the fairly average episodes of season 3 where ticking by I still had a good memory of thee better ones.
