Im a weight watcher loyalist and i cannot stand the atkins etc however I have found that talking to some people that the diet in question simply doesnt work for them.

My wife was on it years ago for 4 months and only lost a stone. ON WW(Yes we are biased) she lost 2.5 stone in the same time period

Would you not prefer to eat healthily and lose bodyfat instead of following a fad diet that will damage your health?

You really need to buy the book and follow it properly.

Orange juice is very high in sugar and apples aren't allowed for the first while either.

Pick up the book, they are always in charity shops for about 2 euro, or amazon will have one second hand.

Rashers and Mayo would not be two items that should be in a fat loss diet.

Also as has been said, don't drink concentrated fruit juices, it's just pure sugar. Replace it with water.

Your right if your talking about a low fat diet but rashers and mayo are allowed on atkins.

im not a fan of low carb diets but if you are going to do it, make sure you do it properly. rashers and orange juice and cheese and fruit might not be the best combinations ... have your fruit, porridge or whatever for breakfast and then combine fats and proteins for the rest of the day...

Thanks for the replys, i tend to normally eat a very carb heavey diet, rice, potatos, pasta, therefore i thought it best to drop them from my diet, i guess il try for anotha wk r 2, and after that if it doesnt work with changes il have to reconsider a better diet plan........

Please buy and follow a book if you're just starting out. There are rules that need to be followed in order to see if ANY plan is worth following.

My own personal favourite is "India and Neris' Idiot Proof Diet". It's written in a really friendly style and gives you strategies on what to when eating out, getting a takeaway etc.

    Best of luck..

Read that book and would give a +1 to those wanting to do the whole low carb thing. While i didn't follow the book i found it a really good read ... and it's like 12yoyo in easons. Win.

You need to drop the fruit. 12-20g of carbs per day max for the start.
that would be the whole day and more in a glass of OJ,

    1. Eat more
    2. Drop the Fruit
    3. Eat WAAAAAAAAY more Veg

op, what are your stats and goals? I dont agree with dropping fruit (juice, yes) within reason. it all comes down to calories, so maybe you are taking in too many for your activity level ..

Its an atkins \ low carb diet - fruit is an absolute no no

yep, and its not working in this case.. its impossible to blame fruit without knowing other details such as stats, activity levels and overall cals

Orange Juice & apples (plural as snacks are plural0 could potentially be 60g's of carbs, also I think this person is taking on too little protein.

Atkins works for everyone who follows it properly - if you follow it half hated, it wont work

obviously we dont know the full story, but if the op is female and not doing any / much exercise, there is MORE than enough protein in there tbh. I agree the op is not following atkins to the letter of the law, my point is that she could easily lose weight and be healthy without doing atkins or any low carb diet.

Jesus where are the vegetables? Can't see how anyone could reccomend you giving up all fruit even in the name of Atkins. Is it really worth cutting out something so nutritious just to try and lose weight a certain way? Local fruits and those from the northern hemisphere aren't as sugary if you want to stabilise your blood sugar.
This seems incredibly unsustainable to me I'm amazed you've mnaged for three weeks! It has to be messing your bowels up by now!

    thanks for all the responces.

basically i am very inactive at the moment, i am practically sitting all day studying, at the most i would get 20minutes to half an hour walking a day which i no is not ideal. i am 5ft3 and currently weigh 9stone 9 pounds, my normal weight used to be around 8tone, surrendly the weight piled on in the period of 2months. I hav cut the fruit out and hopefully this will help, with regard to veg, im ashamed to say i never eat it, i absolutely hate it!!!!!!!

Buy a veg steamer. Everyone i know who has one has commented on how they love to eat veg since getting one. I bought one today. They rang from €20 to €40 in Argos depending on how big you want it and what extra features you want.

Also "India and Neris' Idiot Proof Diet" is only €10.50 in Easons. There is protein power as well but its recipes are more aimed at Americans.

OP - if veg is a probelm why not stir fry it with spices etc. I love stir frying my veg and throwing different spices on them like cajun or some dressing like vinegerette. Makes it much more palatable.

atkins is very unhealthy dangerous diet, you should be getting most of your energy from carbohydrates.with atkins diet the main thing you lose is water and muscle mass.your muscles are pretty much wasting away.this is why people lose weight but once you eat carbs again you put weight straight back on.you wont find a qualified nutritionist that will recommend it.also if eating lots of fatty foods instead your going to increase your cholesterol and ur chances of heart attack.
follow food pyramid, eat smaller pprtions and exercise regularly

There is absolutely NO WAY you should be trying to cut out the fruit if you don't eat masses of vegetables to compensate. I don't think even the most avid Atkins follower will argue that that is a seriously bad idea.

She can still eat berries but the most important part of the diet is the balance between green veg and your protein source. It's only at the start that you reduce certain fruits. Most are reintroduced after 2 weeks

You HAVE to eat veg, particuarly lots of green veg like, broccoli, cabbage. You need them for fibre and vitamins and minerals.

Atkins does work, but you need to get the book, as others have already said. There are 4 phases to Atkins, Phase 1 is what everyone thinks of when Atkins is mentioned, but it is only the kickstart phase and only to be used for a limited time. After that fruits, whole grains and so on are gradually reintroduced. Done properly you will see results. Exercise is important too though, even just walking for 20-30 minutes a day (walk to the shops instead of driving?).

As a side note, you shouldn't aim to lose any more than about 1-2 lbs a week and even that can't be sustained indefinitely.

Forget about the atkins diet, forget about any of the fad diets. they don't work!
Eat five times per day, plenty of veg and salad, lean cuts of meat, oily fish, 2 portions of fruit per day and get out and exercise!!

That's a pretty good description of a good low-carb diet actually. The first 2 week phase is quite low carb, and meals consist of eggs, meat, fish, nuts, cheese, lots of veg and good fat, a lot like your description of a healthy diet above! The ongoing weightloss phase will also include summer fruits, good wholegrains, seeds and pulses.

Ultimately what is avoided is high sugar/ starch and processed foods. The idea that Atkins consists of 3 steaks a day is an unfortunate but common misconception. My colleagues are always commenting on how healthily I eat :)

Veg, salad and fruit are all carbs.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,154 ✭✭✭Dolbert

Indeed they are. They are also a fairly substantial part of any good low-carb diet (low, not no!). Low-carbing does not exclude the above-mentioned foods, I'm buying more veg than ever on a low-carb diet. Many people wrongly assume that Atkins is nothing but meat, not true at all.

have to say i agree 100% with this, even if its not put across in the best way it will work for anybody trying to lose weight!

I agree a no no no go area! remaining on it long term has serious health affects that you will all too know about if you stay on it long enough. your body will stop using gycolyis pathway (breaking down carbohydrates) and you start breaking down proteins into ketones instead to yield energy. From this you will get ketosis which is horrific bad breath you cant shake is just one side effect of many other more serious (dont want to frighten you). Most of the weight you have lost is just water and not fat! once you come off the diet your struck back to square one so your in a vicious circle. Im sorry but I thought you should know that 3-6weeks is when you will notice your weight loss then you hit a brick wall no more water to lose! sorry complete fad! however heating a more balanced diet with some excercise is more beneficial than any of those mad diets out there! All the best
