Tax Bill

The Revenue selected me for a five year audit recently and I've now been landed with a tax bill of over E7k. This is a result of incorrect tax credits apparently. I had written to Revenue some years back asking that extra credits that I had for a personal pension be removed as I was no longer paying into the pension plan but it seems that they didn't actually remove the credits but I didn't realise it. I still have a copy of this letter. Anyone know how I can go about querying / appealing this tax bill? Revenue want it repaid over the next three years through my tax credits but I cannot afford yet another cut in my take home pay?

You can appeal their decision in writing on the basis of your letter. ou should have got a notice of assessment from the revenue with the 7K liability.

Address your letter to them, quote your pps number and outline the reason why you are appealing their decision.

You can appeal however unfortunatley I dont see a happy outcome from this. It will be stated that everybody has the responsiblity for their own tax affairs and that every year a Tax Credit Certificate issued to tax payers to check details that Revenue has on file with them. If you did not correct them on the details they issued then unfortunately you must repay this money.
Just giving you the heads up. But do appeal, you never know!

I would be interested to know how you managed to be caught up with a revenue audit in the first place. You appear to be a normal PAYE worker not subject to self assessment. It sounds unusual that you were subject to an investigation. Did you submit a tax return expecting a refund?

    Kind Regards

Could be just a case of random selection, or maybe the district is targeting certain allowances as part of a project?
