Hi i am looking for gym for me and the missus as just moved into Rathfarnham area? We were thinking of jackie scellys in nutgrove and also carlisle at KCR. any body have info on these places?

Also any body know if any good offers for two people joining. Willing to pay for an annual membership upfront if will get good offer.

Needs to be close enough as travelling too far to gym will probably mean we go less so the closer the better

I've been in Jackie Skelly in Rathfarnham for about a year and a half.

Overall as a gym I've found it exceptionally clean and well-maintained. At the moment I'm (still) just doing cardio. The cardio area has a very large number of treadmills, about twelve cross-trainers, four steppers, three wave machines, 7-8 rowers and about 20 cycles. It can be busy after work, but there's never any hassle at the weekend. Music on the PA is usually ok, there's plasma TV's hanging up with earphone jacks on the machines.

I've found the vast majority of the staff there very helpful. I tend to only deal with one trainer there and he's very good, he'll come around and see how you're getting on which is great for motivation.

The weights area looks like it's maintained to the same standard as the cardio area. You'd want to check the actual weights yourself if you're big into weights - there do appear to be free weights but I'm not sure how heavy they go and what the setup for the bar is.

Never been to any of the classes, from talking to other people they're quite good. Most of them are free - you do have to pay extra for ones in the evening time.

Showers are good and strong with variable temperature. The showers and changing rooms are cleaned regularly throughout the day, which is nice to see.

Sunbeds are available in the changing rooms. You've to pay extra for them. I don't use sunbeds myself but they seem to be modern enough.

There is a sauna in each changing room. Then you've got the swimming pool, with built-in kids' pool. Poolside there's a jacuzzi and steam room. Water-quality and temperature in the pool and jacuzzi used to be a bit hit-and-miss, it's been better in the past while so hopefully it'll stay that way.

You'll need your own lock for the lockers. They cost a bomb at reception, so make sure you've got your own.

My only big complaint about the place is that it's a family gym - so this means that you can get annoying kids around the place. (If you ask me, most times the parents are worse!) The swimming pool and jacuzzi/steam room are not quite so pleasant when there are brats running everywhere.

Price appears to be very variable. I'd definitely go for an upfront payment, and pay in cash or by cheque. The JS sales staff are under pressure to make a sale at all costs, so make sure you negotiate the price down.
