The Swiss are going to the Polls tomorow to vote on a ban of minarets.

    http://www.newser.com/story/2585/tolerant-swiss-to-ban-minarets.html

One woman said that minarets are a sign of Islamic power..and their failre to intergrate into western society has alienated the Islamic comunity.

Are we starting to see an end to the P.C madness?

People complain about the mussies when the worst culprits are the liberal P.C. arses who fight for stupid unified causes.

    Good ol' neutral Swiss

nah...the swiss actually have it right..their attitude I mean.

Basically they are a Nation of Michael O Learys.
I once asked why the ski lifts dont lock down when you lower the guard, that it would be easy for someone to lift it up and fall out...the response I got was.."if you are stupid enough to lift the guard while on the lift..and then stupid enough to fall..then you deserve what you get"

    Ya cant argue with that!

I'm not seeing how letting people build their places of worship correlates to "P.C madness".

You cannot escape the fact that this is an outright restriction of free speech. I'm glad the ban isn't expected to pass, but it's good to see that anti-Islam sentiment is prevalent among the Swiss...

There are only 4 minarets in the entire country. Last I heard there is no chance of this ban happening.

    Not my job I'm afraid.

I think the mob isn't hiring at the moment anyway.....

Its not anti-Islam....its that they just dont want one particular faiths symbols blotting the skyline.

Lest you all forget that alot Swiss nationals died in Egypt about 12 years ago at the hands of Islamic terrorists...so I wouldnt push thier buttons too hard on that one.

As they're ultra-conservative in parts, only letting Women have the vote in the 1970's in some cantons, they're probably "anti" a lot of things, but I fail to see why thats good.

I fail to see what's good about accomodating a culture that is fundamentally hostile to the foundations of Western society - such as gender equality, pluralism, and individual liberty.

Yes it should, and its decreasing in numbers year upon year, while at the same time Islam is gaining a foothold.

I'm not surprised that something like this came up. The SVP (who have said they are against this ban) have about a 35% of the nations backing and these are some posters they have released in the past year or so:

    http://worldradio.ch/wrs/bm~pix/leadseries_svp_poster2008~s600x600.jpg

    http://i.telegraph.co.uk/telegraph/multimedia/archive/01289/svp_poster_birds_1289684c.jpg

    http://www.artthrob.co.za/08apr/images/svp_01a.jpg

So I wouldn't be surprised if this passed really.
(And these posters are absolutely everywhere)

I think it's funny that if they do vote to ban them that Switzerland would never be able to join the EU (I know they voted against it but you never know in the future) because they are denying human rights

well, banning minarets isn't exactly going to make all those European Muslims say 'oh, allright, we'll turn secular now', is it...

Why don't they just blow them up? Ironically, they'll be doing just exactly what fundamentalist Islamists believe in doing.

I personally feel persecuted by this proposed ban.

Not as a muslim, but as an architect.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,749 ✭✭✭✭wes

I have to wonder how insecure someone has to be, to ban something like a minaret, and the reasons given are ridiculous imho, not to mention suspiciously similar to same reasons for Islamists calling for similar bans against distinct Church features, when there not calling for banning them altogether that is. Hilarious to see some of the Swiss following the example of some Middle Eastern countries, the irony is rather hilarious to me.

it took you two minutes to google minarets.
You need to take a course in google efficiency

    enter into google search "define:minarets"
it will give a definition of minarets

The minarets would only be a small part of the "problem". Then you have the massive sound system and the calling to prayer every few hours, plus the echo in the Swiss valleys.

    Cowbells ftw.

I suppose imagine the proposition to build a Minaret in Dublin, how would people take it here?

Clearly you don't get woken up every morning at 6am to Catholic church bells?

    Correct, I don't.

I am now retired. When I worked my alarm clock went off at 06:00 but I did not rely on the local church as an alarm clock.

I would prefer to avoid a possibilty of Sharia law in Europe. In Ireland we have a religious influence but they do not make or administer the law.

Bang goes the poker forum for a start .... Muhammad is reported to have said: "He who plays with dice is like the one who handles the flesh and blood of swine." Abd-Allah ibn Amr reported that Muhammad prohibited all games of chance and card playing that caused financial gain or loss.

Sunni Islamic law allows husbands to divorce their wives by just saying talaq ("I divorce you") three times. In 2003 a Malaysian court ruled that, under Sharia law, a man may divorce his wife via text messaging as long as the message was clear and unequivocal.

A family member worked in a country where religious police beat anyone on the streets during prayer time.

I would not welcome an Islamic majority.

I agree with this ban. A mosque does'nt have to have minarets and they are massive structures.

I find it funny how muslims are always quick to react to anything they believe which threatens they're religion (which seems to be just about anything these days) yet in Islamic countries people of other faiths or often treated worse and little is said about it.

I am sure Islamic extremists make the exact same arguments about church bells and crosses.

What I find funny is people who take similar positions to extremists in Middle Eastern countries, who then go on to complain about them.

People here want their land to be kept the way they want it - the extremist muslims want the world to be how they want it!

I am sure that extremist Muslims would make the exact same argument, they want there land to kept they way they want it. They could even accuse the West of wanting to force there world view on them, by pointing to several European countries joining in on the US's war of aggression against Iraq.

If you support such a position over here, why would you complain when people in other countries do the same? Bit of a double standard don't you think? Why don't they have the right to tell other Religions that they are limiting there rights to practice there faith, as they fearful of them? I am personally against such things, regardless of who is doing it, but I find it hilarious at how inconsistent people who would supports such things are, complaining when the other guys does the exact crap they wish to do.

I fail to see any difference really. People who support this kind of thing in Europe, are really in no position to complain about Muslims doing it in countries where they are the majority.

And ordinary Muslims just want to be able to worship in peace. Why do people allow their views on great swathes of people to be coloured by the actions of a few extremists?

Couldn't the Spire of a Christian Cathedral/Church also be associated with power and domination? In fact the early christian church on this island was so 'sneaky' it converted many pagan festivals and beliefs into it's structure.
That way they could easily 'assimilate' the pagans, now how manipulative was that. The Swiss should get their priorities right, maybe they should open up their 'famous' banking system, where many a mass murderer, war criminal or drug lord have concealed their 'ill gotten gains'. Indeed the Swiss gave many a Nazi war criminal safe passage, note - the special arrangement they had with the Dutch KLM in ferrying Nazi's to Argentina. So any anti-Islamic extreme right-wing view/moves comes as no surprise really.
