Gas Fire Keeps Going Out

    Hi

I just turned on my gas fire tonight for the first time in 4 or 5 weeks and although it "catches", the flame just goes anytime between 5 minutes to one hour after it's lit. Luckily I'm in the room and noticed, but if I wasn't, there is probably gas leaking into the room from the open valve although I've not smelt anything.

Can I just turn the fire on and off a few times to maybe clear the lines, or will I have to call someone in?:)

Hopefully there is a safety device fitted to your fire and it's most properly the reason the fire keeps from working properly, either it's defective or if you haven't had it serviced for a while then the fire and the safety device would need cleaning due to dirt, either way i would get a RGII gas fitter to service your fire, i would leave the fire isolated until it's safety is confirmed, Gary.

Did you get someone out from Bord Gais, and if so, did they replace the fire or did you have to buy a new one yourselves?

It has been going on a long time and I've had three different people out who were registered with bord gais over the last one and a half years! The first one said it needed a part and that he would be in touch the following week - that was the last I heard from him.The second said it was dangerous , not to try and use it ,that we would need a new one and that he could organise that.He said he would ring after the weekend-never heard from him again! The third said it just needed to be cleaned. He did that and it worked fine for a few days-then it gradually took longer and longer for the pilot light to connect-then it stopped connecting. It took months before he returned my many calls but at that stage we decided to replace it as it was costing us too much money with all the call outs. That was last week.So we rang our local bord gais showroom.Someone came out to see what would suit/ measure space etc and they are going to drop out brochures.I am going to ring them after weekend and maybe call out to the showroom. Will keep you posted on what happens!

 Isn't it reassuring to see their level of commitment in dealing with gas and the accompanying dangers:rolleyes:

I plan to call somone tomorrow morning and am now dreading it as I am a female living on my own so I expect I'll be given even more of a runaround than you were! Perhaps I should call Rent-A-Gent first:D

Keep me posted, I am on a steep learning curve...

Have a look at the bord gais website. There are a few names in or around clonmel. An average call out charge for me was about 80 euro. How old is your fire?Mine is 17 years.I think it's good to get someone out to check it out but if you find it is constantly giving you trouble and you are paying out more money then you might think of getting a new one.Good luck!

Gas man came around this morning. €90 for the first half hour, the €25 for each additional hour. He stayed for 35 minutes and simply cleaned out the appliance. He said there is a 2 month warranty on the work he carried out this morning. Hopefully, I'll only be charged €90. If they tack on the €25 extra I'll be bitterly dissappointed!

My fire is also 13 years old and had really never been services before.:o

I have had the same problem periodically over the last few weeks, the fire will ignite as normal, burn as normal but if I turn on my hot water boiler the fire will go out pretty much immediately.

It was working as normal last week but this weekend was back to its worst. Also, after it has gone out, it takes about 15 mins or longer before it will ignite properly again.

Any ideas on a self-service solution or should I just get a full service engineer in?
