Rolling Contracts - renew or not ?

The OH started working for a new company 5 months ago. Because the company wants to keep the official headcount down she was only given a 6 month contract. This is nearly up now and will be removed as she is good at the job and there is plenty of work there for her.

Others she is working with are also on similar contracts and have been renewed over and over. The thing is all of them have had to approach their respective bosses to get the contracts renewed. When approached the managers had no problems and got new contracts drawn up for them.

Last month a colleague didn’t bother approaching the manager about a new contract and carried on as before. Colleague is still working and still getting paid. Manager has never brought it up.

My question, are there pros / cons of continuing working without a contract ?

Does she become "permanent” after working for so long with the company - without a contract?
Is it a case of “you were here on a 6 months contract” and even though it wasn't officially renewed that this would always be the case.

    Cheers.

the same contracts, ie 6 months and 1 months The job she is doing position she is in will be there which
