You may have a problem with the airbag or just a false alarm.
There is an issue with BMW airbag warning lights. They can be triggered by a poor connection to the seat belt tensioners. The wiring is located under the driver and front seat passenger seats

You will need to get it checked out anyway and reset using a specialist tool.

Your airbag system will be disabled while the issue remains. A diagnosis (at a dealer or specialist) should reveal the cause (possibly something under one of the front seats). Once the problem is resolved, it will need to be electronically reset to turn off the light (again at a dealer or specialist)

cheers for the replies, the seatbelt tensioner is not rewinding properly, ie when you take it off it just hangs there and very very slowly starts to wind back in, would this be affecting the sensor as you describe

The seatbelt tensioner I referred to is the gas discharge tube that fires in the event of a collision. It is located on the left side of the driver's seat. It is a small (maybe 3 inches) cylinder shaped device with electric contacts.
It tightens up the seatbelt when activated, for example, by a collision.
As I sais previously there is also one on the passenger side.

Have a look at the forums on www.bmw-driver.net

sound found that alright had a look at the wires under the drivers seat and had a wiggle at them and warning light went out so presume its just a loose connection on it thanks for the help

Surprised it went out without a diagnostic scan and reset.
Make sure it comes on when you switch on ignition. At least you will know it is operational.
Still think you should have it checked out for your own safety.

bit strange alright, have chked it a couple of times and seems to be back to normal ie light comes on when you turn on the ignition, stays on for 10sec or so and then goes out. yep will get it chked out alright as soon as i can nothing like the peace of mind.
