not sure about applecare side of things. Search this forum for, "cracked". theres lots of threads about cracked and broken screens...

Applecare won't cover accidental damage like a cracked screen.

I called apple and they said I could get it replaced for €249. would it be wise to erase the phone before I give it to them?

Its essentially an extension of the standard hardware coverage.

Somnion, if you're based in Dublin or can communite to the city centre I'd strongly recommend dealing with Techmenders. I was in the same position as you, cracked screen with no insurance. But a friend recommend this crowd and they were brilliant.

They'll replace the screen for only €70 and for an extra 20 they'll do it in a hour. Because I was preparing myself to spend at least 100-150 on getting it fixed I had no problem spending the €90 to get it done just like that. They'll also do it in 4 hours for €10 extra or a day for a fiver. The usual repair time is around 2-3 working days iirc.
