Waterford Cork in the 2004 Munster final for me. Crazy game of hurling. The defending was poor but there were some great scores taken and the dignity John Mullane showed after the game after being sent off. He took his punishment as he knew himself it was a moment of madness.

In football I'd say I would agree with you about Mayo V Dublin. Just the build up to it and all the excitement during the game aswell.

    2001 SFC Semi-Final Meath 2-14 Kerry 0-5

    Remember being absolutely gobsmacked.

The one's in bold for me.

But if i'd to give a single vote it would have to go to Galway v Kilkenny (Senior All-Ireland Semi Final) in 2005. An epic game, which restored my faith in Hurling which had been in decline in my heart. F*ckin' brillant game.

as soon as i saw this thread, i thought of this game -

    http://www.independent.ie/sport/gaelic-football/college-classics-right-up-there-with-best-of-them-1265472.html

the All-Ireland senior semi-final between Colaiste na Sceilge, Caherciveen and St Jarlath's, Tuam in 2002. ended 20-20 and 37 scores from play, the sides were level 17 times.

and the replay was nearly as good. i dont think 2 college teams ever captured the imagination of a nation in one game before, remember listening to both games on the radio and the sense of excitement was unreal.

on a personal note, i remember playing in a game that ended 4-16 to 4-14 to us about 9/10 years ago in a minor championship 1/4 final and it ranks as one of the greatest games played in kerry, had penalties, sendings off, and i would think, if i remember correctly, that only 1 of our scores came from a free. to quote the papers the following week - " a game that will long in the memory, a game that had everything and one that will go down as one of the best of all time in Kerry".

from an intercounty point of view, the game that stands out is last years Kerry V galway game. was it 1-20 to 1-16? played in perhaps the worst ever conditions for a championship game played in croke park, but it was immense. some of the skill that day was unbelieveable. you only appreciate the game when you were at it and saw the level of flooding outside the ground.

For sheer drama I'd have Meath - Westmeath in 2001. Think Meath were 9 points down at one stage and were 3 points down in injury time before Ollie Murphy got a goal in the last minute.
I'd also have Meath - Louth in 2002. 4 points down in injury time and we won by 2. The look on the Louth's fan's faces was priceless :D
In hurling I don't think any game can beat Galway - Kilkenny in 2005.

I'd agree with the Westmeath game but the Louth game was terrible, it was an unbelievable finish but the first 69 minutes were painful. Was very funny though, I travelled with three Louth men that day and I don't think i've ever seen anybody as stunned.

For insane scores with a constant back-and-forth action at an almost unreal pace: Galway v Kilkenny 2005

For sheer drama, intensity and epitomising everything good about Munster hurling : Waterford v Cork 2004

There are a few hurling games this decade that I remember Wexford winning or drawing with last minute goals. Probably the best and most exciting of the 2003 All-Ireland semi final against Cork.

2004 Leinster Hurling semi final against Kilkenny (watch for Cody falling to the ground in despair after Wexford score):

    2003 All-Ireland hurling semi final:

From a football point of view the Wexford Meath Leinster championship in 2008 was pretty good.

From a neutral point of view the best game I was at was the Armagh Tyrone semi final in 2005.

just to say to the last 5 posters i stressed at the start of the topic i was looking for games that did not involve your "own" county.as good as those games are try to be unbiased here.

As a Kerryman, I'd pick the following:

    Football

    • Armagh-Dublin 2002 AI Semi-Final
    • Tyrone-Armagh 2005 AI Semi-Final
    • Dublin-Mayo 2006 AI Semi-Final
    • Tyrone-Dublin 2005 AI Quarter-Final
    Hurling

    • Cork-Clare 2005 AI Semi-Final 2005
    • Waterford-Cork 2004 MHC Final
    • Kilkenny-Galway 2005 AI Semi-Final
    • Cork-Waterford 2007 AI Quarter Final (best game I saw in person)
    • Kilkenny-Tipp 2009 AI Final

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,477 ✭✭✭grenache

I already gave my list above, but if i had to pick one game from each code it would be Galway v Kilkenny '05 in hurling and Kerry v Galway '08 in football. The skill and entertainment level in both games couldn't be bettered.

Lads just reading this thread now so have to have a think before i give a full reply as still half asleep.

    Football

    Dublin v Mayo in 2006 (i think)

    Hurling

Cork v Wexford in 2006 (could be wrong on the year)

However, as a Waterford man (so this one can't appear on my list), the Waterford v Limerick drawn match of 2003 was the best game of hurling ever.

It was the one that didn't make the telly as Thurles was been done up and didn't pass Health and Safety. A shame as it was a classic. I'm told there's a DVD of it around the place.

i wanted to put that on my list but seeing as i'm Limerick i couldn't. You're right though, a classic. Real see-saw game. Eoin Foley's point at the end saved it for Limerick. Also i forgot to mention Cork-Wexford '03 semi final, the first drawn game. A great match and a great goal by wexford to save it in the end. You could add the Tipp-Wexford '01 drawn semi final to that list too. Larry O'Gorman's goal was one of the best ever!

    To counter-act the painful memory.
    Westmeath v Dublin 2004
Westmeath v Laois 2004 Leinster Final Replay

Hurling-wise, one that stands out to me is the KK-Tipp 2002 final. Think it was that one that DJ came back in, and nothing I've seen has lived up to that one IMO. Many munster matches aswell, alwasy great to watch.

KK - Tipp 2002 was the semi final, they played in the league final that year alright and it was a far more exciting game, iirc there was 10 goals scored, 5 for either side, and Brendan Cummins been man of the match, Philly Maher did he's cruciate in that game and Tipp were never the same again really untill the current team.

the reason i asked people not to include their own counties in the list is because whenever people mention any of their counties matches there is a tendency by people to call it the greatest ever mainly due to the fact that they won.would people say the same if their county lost.

although seen as how you mentioned a drawn game ill forgive that.what was mullane doing handpassing the ball into the net.

    here it is.enjoy.

Yes, your right. Just thought back on post now and it was semi. Still a cracking match though.
The league final you're thinking of was 2003.

And yes, your right too. Was prob the first match I fully remember going to, think it was 5-14 to 5-13 final score, Maher injured. Remember that moment vividly, he was my favourite player in that team.
