Acer Laptop totally dead, does motherboard need to be replaced?

Hello. I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this, if it's not feel free to move it mods, thanks.

I'm trying to fix a friends laptop for them. Apparently the laptop was dropped and now there isn't a geek out of it. It's an Acer Aspire 7004WSMi.

So I thought it would be more than likely a problem with the power supply / connector or something.
I checked the voltage at the charger and I'm getting the expected voltage (19.5 V or something).

I took it apart and checked the voltage at the connector on the motherboard. Here is the power connector:

I checked the voltage at the back of the connector and got got the 19.5V so I assume the connection from charger to laptop is ok. The side connectors and the case, labelled "1", are shorted. I'm not sure if this is supposed to be like this. I labelled the centre pin "3"

I noticed that there seems to be a missing chip beside the connector, U24. Maybe that is normal for this model though. There is a similar "missing" chip somewhere else. It's U14 in the pic below.

So, here's the underside of the connector. The pins marked "1" are connected to the connector case and side parts marked above. The part marked "2" doesn't seem to be connected to anything, I would have expected it to be connected to the centre pin, "3" in the above pic.

This is on the motherboard, I don't know if it's a model number or what.

Does anybody have and ideas? Where could I find a schematic / circuit diagram for this to try and figure out what is going on. If I knew what u24 / u14 was maybe I could just get replacements or do ye think this is a lost cause. Would a new motherboard be the solution? No lights or anything come on when I plug in the motherboard.

Thanks for reading, sorry for the long post and I hope I was clear enough. Any help would be great.

    Moved to Laptops.

Try checking for loose wires/connections as well. I'm pretty sure the missing ICs just aren't used on that model.

Thanks. Ya, that's what I was thinking myself really about the missing ics.
