Sky warranty

I have Sky installed since April 2008. I got a HD box (costing about €250) and a standard box. The Thomson HD box has been playing up for a while now - it fails to record sometimes saying there is no signal. I have been on to Sky support and they tell me to cut the power and reboot. It is then OK for a couple of weeks or so. I am fed up so I phoned them today and asked them to rectify the problem. They offered to send an engineer and said there would be a charge of €100 as the box is "out of warranty".

I believe that under EU law that the warranty should be longer than this and that therefore I should not have to pay for a repair or replacement of a faulty set top box. Am I right?

On paper yes but to be honest don't get your hopes up, best ring NCA and see what they have to say.

Quickest way to sort it out would be to threaten to quit unless you get a free service call.
Failing that I'd just sign up to a new account as a HD box is free now and you can have a new dish and cabling if you want.

Sorry for OT . Has anyone heard of a case being enforced by the EU under the two year rule. All the wholesalers and manufacturers I deal with (with the honourable exception of smart in Germany) insist on one year warranties.

Thanks for the replies. I am expecting the Sky man tomorrow and I hope that he can solve the problem. If he can't I will contact Sky with a view to cancelling some or all of the service. At the moment I have Sports and Movies which comes to about €102 per month.

The Sky engineer called this morning. he said that my HD box needed to be "downloaded" and that this would rectify the problems. The process took about ten minutes. Can someone please explain what this is?
