I've moved house a few times over the past few years., I've now been contacted by an agency that collects debts to say that i owe money on a bill i thought i'd paid. Thankfully i have the money to cover this so payment now isn't a problem.

My question is firstly, Do I have to deal with this agency now or can i just pay the original company?

Secondly, how will this affect my credit rating or will there be any other problems because of this?

The company I had the bill with originally isn't a part of the Irish Credit Bureau.

    thanks.

Firstly I would ask the collection agency for proof that they are working for the company you owe the money to. Then I would contact the original company and explain that you thought you had already paid the bill. Once it is established that you owe the money (if you do), I would ask the original company can you pay them directly, if you can't I would just pay the collection agency.
