And why am I getting emails about her.

This is a ridiculous abuse of mailing lists, presumably in the college, and I personally am very interested to find out who's to blame.

It's not just in the TCD email but my old UCD one has that same email. It could be worse, it could be swine flu!;)

    I got this as well...
Meh, it's not like it's a big deal...

My god, how many threads do people have to start giving out about mailing lists? You have an email address, you're gonna get the odd bit of spam. Get over it.

I happen to know exactly who sent this. It is not a Trinity student and has nothing to do with Trinity whatsoever. Pull your heads out of your arses.

Abusing email like this is a big deal. You're actually saying there's nothing wrong with taking an enormous list of email addresses, used for society purposes or whatever, and then just giving it to someone so they can spam you with commercial email?

It's wrong, but that doesn't make it a big deal.

That's my problem exactly with this. This email is a private email that I use for college use only, I never signed up to hear some bint warble against ****ty BANGIN' BEATZ.

Its that society ****e all over again (Rampant this time of year). When will these society socialites learn that the majority of Trinity students don't care about their CV caressing, society elitisms?? *yawn*. Take their funding away and see how long they last. Most people in my experience don't use them, they are only there to patch up ego's.

You'd know who she is if you'd read the email.

Why do you all seem to think societies have given away your email addresses? I mean, you type your supposedly "private" username into how many different login boxes a day? It's hardly personal information that nobody can get.

Spam is an inherent part of using email. Get over yourselves.

The Hist didn't even want you? That's gotta be crushing.

Well considering I don't use my tcd email for anything, and get all my college stuff forward to my own Gmail account, it would appear that someone with access to my TCD address has given it away.

The spam itself doesn't really annoy me. It's the fact that someone is abusing a voluntary position for their own financial gain that gets me . I doubt this is a society either as it appears to appear exclusively in the @tcd.ie adresses (i didn't have my tcd email in 1st year, and i have not joined the phil or the hist since- if it's not them then which society is it?).

Nope, for this one I'm pointing the blame at the SU. While I'm sure many within the su are fine people (actually i don't really believe this but for balanced debate i have to add it in). But all it takes is one rogue agent (possibly within the ents crew and looking to gain a foothold within the music/ clubnight promotions business) and the mailing list gets leaked (for a price of course).

Attatched is my email response. I urge you to do the same.

    +1 on the SU point

I haven't gotten any. If it's from the same person it's not hard to add an auto-delete filter, like I have done with most of the newsletter / chaplain etc email addresses.

The Data protection law requires that all societies and clubs (as data processors) inform you of the purpose of their wanting your email when you give it to them, must keep the data secure, and must stick rigidly to their stated email purpose.

When getting an email address off a fresher, I make sure to tell everyone that this is purely to inform people of society events, and that they can be removed at any time.

I didn't get this email, could someone tell me if it was sent to specific names (johndoe@tcd.ie) one of the class mailing lists (which is abused far too much), or what?
If it was the 2nd one, I'm not surprised, IS services really need to crack down on the abuse of this, 3rd year eng has seen some blatant spam (30 fricking emails on a class party, (24/05/09))....

Well I'm pointing the blame at you vinylmesh. You can all blame the Phil or the SU all you want, but this was clearly part of vinymesh's grand scheme! Trust me, I've posted it on the Internet.

Seriously though, this was not sent by someone in Trinity. It wasn't even sent by a student.

I also hate spam emails. All it takes is one person in a society to fcuk up and cc the weekly news letter instead of bcc. Or one of the committee members with access to the email account to leak them. Those emails are then on a mailing list forever.

Having said that, Dongasaurus and BERNHARD GOETZ, you know as well as I do, that it isn't exactly hard to get a list of college emails if you know where to look.
