Yes. We were taught in school...even though we live in Tipperary and were highly unlikely to drown in a puddle!!

I nearly drowned in St Enda's pool*, years ago now. I got out of my depth and the HARRIDAN of an instructor ****ed me out of it :o

    zero sympathy,

I lived though so it's cool.

I can't understand how someone wouldn't be able to swim (barring a phobia of course). It's amazingly good fun, very good exercise, and not being able to swim is pretty dangerous imo... Mostly though its just the best thing to do. ever. :)

Nope not really. I can't tread water at all. My parents were sittin looking at me thinking i was waving at them while in a water park in Spain-it was only when the life guard jumped in and pulled me out they realised i'd been drowning! They stopped waving back at me quick enough then!!

My official stance is that I can :pac:

I used to be a really good swimmer but I don't like it at all now. Haven't been near a pool for 2/3 years.. probably wouldn't remember how to now

I learned one day by randomly going into the deep end and doing a doggy paddle...I worked outwards from there. No I can do do every sort of swim in all distances (first man to swim across the Atlantic). I used to "learn" in school aswell, but I just did it for the doss. :D

No, have a phobia of my body been floating in the water, couldn't be able to control myself. I'd still take baths though, its just the floating part that scares the sh1t out of me.

I did wonder before though been on an island with lakes/rivers everywhere if the worst came to the worst, i'd be bricking it if a tsunami came :D

I cant swim and have a phobia of water. When i was about 2yr's old i was in the local swimming pool when someone jumped in the pool nearly on top of me, frightened the crap out of me.
I then fell into a swimming pool when i was about 10, only to be dragged out by an 8yr old girl.
So i stay away if i can.

Not a hope, my godfather tried to teach me when I was around 10, but my head went under the water on my first lesson, never tried again.

Also, being outdone by his three-year-old son at the time was very embarassing :(

Went to swim lessons when I was younger, still don't know how to swim tho.
Nearly drowned my cousin in the Auqadome in Tralee.
Got lessons 2 years ago before going to Oz, the instructor said the left side of my body does not coordinate with my right.... She asked me to leave..... :o

Yes, learned to swim when I was around 7 years old.
Surprised so many people can't swim:confused:

I have not swam in fcuking ages though, so I am not as agile as I once was.

Went for swimming lessons every friday night as a child for ages. Started in the baby pool and didn't stop till we finished the life-savers course. My mum couldn't swim and she thought it was important.

My parents used to take me swimming when I was a baby.
Had lessons and swam ever since.
I've won medals for swimming in that community games lark in the past and I'm almost fully qualified as a lifeguard.
    I love swimming!
