Fee for initial consultation?

Is it common for a solicitor to charge a fee for an initial consultation where I'm just trying to find out if I want to engage him or her?

I have been told there is usually no charge as s/he is performing no legal service. It's more a "getting to know you" thing and they are hoping to get your business.

If, indeed, it is common to charge a fee for that time, what is the typical fee?

Talk to a few solicitors in your locality, giving a brief outline of whats involved and explain that you aren't certain that you want to hire someone yet, but that you'd like to sit down with them to see if they can help you. And ask them what their charge would be.

If they think you'll be a worthwhile client, I can see it as being free. If they think you're a time waster or trouble then expect a charge of €50-150.

A lot depends on the type of business. If it is a commercial situation, they are more likely to charge. If it is in connection with a personal injury they are most unlikely to charge. Larger firms tend to want to charge for every minute. Smaller operators will be more likely to give you a hearing and may be prepared to work on a no foal no fee basis.

I had heard that many desperate solicitors were double-jobbing, but animal husbandry?:p
