The Country is in tatters with flooding where the fcuk is the EU?

Almost two months ago we were promised the earth and stars from this organization and all those that supported it if we voted YES in the Lisbon referendum. Now we did and the country is in tatters.

The Government has offered a measly €10 Million towards relief which is absolutely fcuk all (Probably as much as it could afford at this time) when you consider the amount of damage.

Surely to God the EU should jump in and help this small "region" of Europe. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina the Federal US Government assisted New Orleans immediately with aid and assistance. I don't see or hear of anything yet from Brussels.

Payback for voting yes to Lisbon.

Get used to it. This is the way it's going to be from now on.

there is a delegation on the way from the eu to assess the damage and to assess how much relief is necessary

this was on the news yesterday

edit;also the 10million is immediete emergency money, members of goverment have said more will be made available if necessary

Why would a small(By International standards) flood be a reason for aid? Besides that, the EU will more than likely act sooner or later. In any case I would hazard a guess and say the vast majority of those affected have insurance in any case.

Where the fcuk is the EU you say.

I believe it's still in the place it was before the flooding.

A bit less of that Cork place would help out the economy big time. I suspect the government sent massive jets full of water to flood 'em out.

Youre not comparing the relatively small flooding in Ireland to Hurricane Katrina are you ? Hurricane Katrina caused over $100 billion of damage and killed almost 2000 people.

Well actually they didn't, there was a remarkable delay of several days.

Now somewhat more than 1,000 people died as a result of Hurricane Katrina and there were hundreds of thousands of displaced people. Are you sure the two events are comparable?

At a practical level, what do you want the EU to do? Provide a zillion j-cloths to dry it all up?

EDIT: Hurricane Katrina Fatalities 1,836 confirmed, 705 missing. Damage $81.2 billion. A year later there was still 100,000 displaced people.

OP, the EU(or rather ECB) is keeping this country pardon the pun afloat at the moment. We are at the mercy of markets in relation to the deficit. If we were not in the EU, we would be the next Zimbabwe.

For starters provide some decent equipment such as water pumps and drainage and dehumidifiers. I'm sure there is not enough of this stuff about and what is is grossly underpowered. My mate works in the Hire business and says they are all booked out.

I bet the Israelis, the gubberment, the taxi drivers, and any other inflatable spaghetti monster you think of are all responsible for this too, right?

    Probably tracking us through RFID.

Actually, the EU have sent a mission of experts to examine the damage and work out how much they'll give us (could be up to 26 million Euro). They're not just gonna hand out money willy nilly...remember what happened the last time they did that? Actually, forget that phraseology, we're living it now.

Hopefully it will mean some guy in Brussels will become charge of planning for Ireland rather than your local Jimmy 'I prefer white envelopes' Delany who with a few fifties you can re-zone a few hundred acres of field into residential, and cover a large flood plain in concrete and tar, thus displacing the water that can and does lie there.

Its a real shame this flooding didnt happen in a few months, and that 82 Billion dollars worth of damage was done to NAMA-fied buildings. Then we could have the insurance companies cover the cost of NAMA.

Perhaps I should have used more smileys - I wasn't serious. I don't believe the Lisbon treaty has any bearing on the flooding situation.

This is one area where I would actually prefere EU involvement and expertise. Look at Ennis it a fcukig disaster, large parts of the Fergus flood plains were sold off to greedy property developers in the last 10 years along the Quinn, Gort and Tulla Road, Now look a the consequences.

If someone was qualified in the town council it would have never happened. Hopefully in future if there is ever another property boom someone with a knowledge of irrigation and flooding would oversee planning.

One things for sure, anything that got flooded out this time will now be almost worthless and uninsurable, developers (& NAMA (taxpayers)) will be left holding the baby.

You know alot of the time, I laugh at what you come out with but this is fuking ridiculous.
A few floods around a country that is mostly insured.. and you want to compare that to Katrina where thousands died and what happened people in that stadium afterwards is horrific.
You're a disrespectful fool for trying to compare localized flooding to one of the biggest natural disasters of our time.

And what can the EU do before the water has even subsided? Stop postin crap.

It's very hard to argue with this. The Irish government are fully responsible here for allowing planning in such obvious 'high risk' areas.

We can't rely on the EU to bail us out every time we run into difficulties. Hopefully the EU Commission will see this as an "extraordinary regional disaster" after their assessment, which will mean we'll get aid.

Don't worry OP, I'm sure all those EU stormtroopers and tank divisions that anti-lisbon people promised were comming will be here shortly to rid us of democracy and help with the flood waters..... wait its too perfect, it must be a set-up. The EU planned this flood all along so they could send in their crack EU troops in to "help with the rescue and clean-up operation".

My god, its only a matter of time before the forced abortions, euthinasia and minimum wages of 1.85

    What have we done......!!!!????

i believe that flooding is considered an act of god therefore people whos houses have been flooded are not able to claim insurance on certain things unless specifically covered by water damage.
so you could claim for laptops, and electronic devices but water damage to the property itself and vehicles aren't covered.
Some of my friends in the west are fcuked for this reason!

You've just give the EU the excuse and public backing to introduce an EU tax to build up funds for this sort of thing in future.
