Just wondering, when you buy from the UK, but pay VAT at 21.5%...

... Does that mean that the VAT on that item goes to the Irish government? Or does it go to the UK government as that's were the item was purchased?

Just curious really, as I'd feel a lot better buying all my Christmas pressies online if I knew the Irish government was getting the VAT!

Yes, the VAT goes to the Irish government. We're VAT registered in the UK and Ireland, and all the UK VAT goes to the UK government.

If you are paying Irish VAT yes it should go to the Irish Gov, places like Amazon, Pixmania, etc have Irish Vat numbers so they pay Irish VAT to the Gov.

Small online UK shops will charge you Vat like 17% (I think is the UK rate) that will go to UK Gov

15%, until their next budget anyway, when it's rumored to be increasing.

All comes down to whether the company is registered for VAT here or not. If they export over a certain amount (think it's 100k a year) to any EU country, then they need to register for VAT in that country.

It acually varies by country but here's the breakdown ..

    Austria 100,000
    Belgium 35,000
    Bulgaria 35,000
    Cyprus 35,000
    Czech Republic 35,000
    Denmark 35,000
    Estonia 35,000
    Finland 35,000
    France 100,000
    Germany 100,000
    Greece 35,000
    Hungary 35,000
    Ireland 35,000
    Italy 35,000
    Latvia 35,000
    Lithuania 35,000
    Luxembourg 100,000
    Malta 35,000
    Netherlands 100,000
    Poland 35,000
    Portugal 35,000
    Romania 35,000
    Slovakia 35,000
    Slovenia 35,000
    Spain 35,000
    Sweden 35,000
    UK 100,000 sterling

We're set at €35,000 so if any business from another EU state has sales of more than €35,000 to Irish customers they must register for VAT here and pay this to the Irish revenue.
