Its tough cycling against the wind but I cannot cope at all when there is too much direct wind. I'm wondering if anyone else has this problem and what they do to get around it?

More the cold air for me, I get extreme shortness of breath. Given the wind chill factor this would probably also happen to me in high winds, but I'm not sure.

A buff or a thermal with a high neck, maybe some kind of fleece lined jsersey. But I have definitely noticed the buff makes a difference on windy days.

Dr. Cockroach Ph.D.: [about B.O.B] You must forgive my friend, but as you can see, he has no brain.
B.O.B.: Turns out, you don't need one. Totally overrated! I don't even have to...
    [Starts gasping for air]
B.O.B.: I forgot how to breathe! Help me, Doctor Cockroach!
Dr. Cockroach Ph.D.: Suck in, B.O.B.
B.O.B.: [breathes normally] Thanks, Doc. You're a life saver.

    I love that film.

You might just be pushing too hard. If I am out for a steady spin in high winds I just turn my speedo off, ride at my regular level of effort and ignore what speed I am doing.
