How do you set up a facebook fan page, and can it be done so as not to be connected with my profile page?

It won't be connected with your personal profile page. If you post something on th fan page it will appear as coming from the fan page and not your own profile.

However, you can set up a business account which will allow you manage a fan page. However, it won't allow you interact with any other pages.

You just click on the link under the registration fields on the Facebook hopepage. I'm not sure if you can pass over an existing fan page that you mention to a business account.
