I suppose you could go down the route of getting a second hand one, but if they're as much of a problem as you say, it mightn't last too long. At least a new one will have a warranty.
Have you priced the unit in Northern Ireland?

AFAIK this can only be done by the dealer and has to be a new unit, it is coded to the immobiliser and can only be done online by vw.

    06 passat again.
They seen to be a complete pile of crap.
Have you had handbrake, steering column, flywheel, wiper motor, fuel pump or fuel cooler problems yet?

Holy schweppes batman - makes you almost wish you'd bought a Mazda diesel.

    Not.:P

I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

I had handbrake and fuel pump in one weekend! (05 1.9)

Bear in mind that UK sourced VW's get 2 years manufacturers warranty and 1 year dealer warranty, so if it came from the North (as many have) the original supplying dealer may be able to help. VW Ireland won't do anything for you in this case though.
