DVR recordings auto-deleting

Help! My UPI recordings - Thompson-branded DVR - are disappearing after about four months. I can't find any reference to this in the guide, and it doesn't happen on my daughter's setup. Anyone got any suggestions how to stop this before the last season of The Wire self-destructs?

when your box is full it starts deleting the last unprotected recording to make room for the next recording. You can protect certain recordings though.

Thanks, but I never let the box get full - I delete stuff to maintain up to ten percent free space. Still the oldest recordings steadily vanish as well. Maybe the thing's just faulty.
